A little arcade power supply help.....for a complete newbie
« on: September 07, 2006, 05:21:44 am »
G'day all,

I recently bought two old arcade machines. A good 4 player 3 button 27inch machine fully working.... I intend to put a MAME PC in it :P [drool]

The second was a smaller ?cabaret cab, wired for jamma but monitor not working, nor anything for that matter.

I wanted to test how "non working" the 2nd one was...  so I hooked up its power supply and replaced a few fused ,,,,,.... BANG and a really cool smoke and light show ensured from the power supply.
Thinking I must have wired it wrong. I took the working power supply out of the good machine and hooked that up......... Same Bang.....

Ordered a new power supply. Arrived today

I am now trying to hook it up to my good machine. I have a few questions.

1 Given that i am in Australia  should  i switch it to 240V in all cases or do some aussie arcades convert 240V to 110 at the ?isolation transformer box thingy?

2. Given that I assumed it had to be switched to 240V I hooked it up and .... nothing really happened game wise that is.  All the LEDs on the isolation transformer lit up. Monitor came on.... no bang but no game..... What have i done wrong?

3 The power supply (btw i am talking about the one that converts to 12V and 5v etc) has a digital readout showing output voltage. It only says 3 to 4 volts. I have turned the pot on it and can only get 3 - 4 V.  Is this because the input voltage switch is at 240V...... therefore should I turn it to 110V which i assume will increase output.?

4 If i turn it to 110V and it should have been at 240V will i get to enjoy the smoke and light show again?

Any help would be much appreciated.

if your mains voltage is 240v at the input a/c wires of the psu then set the psu at 240 (if 110v at input then 110 on supply)
meter you input voltages first, don't guess them
if you have set everything correct and your wiring is perfect but you have low 5volts then there is some kind of component failure somewhere on the cab.
my thought is that the good working cab has an transformer and it uses 110vfrom the said output for your psu input
the second cab i reckon has 240v input whether from an iso transformer or direct from mains
if you feed 240 into 110 set psu it blows crapless(bridge rectifier circuit, fuse, caps and sometimes switching i/c)

I was thinking my "good power supply" was originally set to 110V and thats why it blew up when i put it in the old cab.  I have set the new power supply to 240 V now but only get 3V output. I will test the a/c wires when i get to tricky dickies to buy myself a meter.  i cant afford to blow the new PSU so I will wait till i test the output,  I assume i just poke the meter probes onto the end of the a/c wires.

Thanks for your help

Did the "2nd cab" have a game board in it? Some power supplies don't like having no load.
NO MORE!!

tested the A/c out and it is 110V, so switched the psu to 110V and bobs my uncle it worked

the old cab had a board in in but it may be U/S.

Problemmo solved for now

Thanks

Now i just have to wait for ipac jpac and arcadevga to arrive from the stated  :applaud:
