Tempest 3000 ? Can it be played on a PC ?
« on: March 05, 2006, 04:10:46 pm »
Hi all,

that plasma pong got me thinking about Tempest 2000 so I got the Jaguar system and played a few games... good stuff.

It doesn't appear that Nuon ever caught on too well... is there any way to play Tempest 3000 on a PC ?  If you played it, is it any good ?

Thanks
Jim

Tempest 2000 was also released on the PC, but 3000? I'm a huge tempest fan, I did not know another version came out, I will have to look for it.

This was one of the games that was emulated in the jaguar emulator.  I tried it ages ago and have since changed systems (and didn't copy it over)

anyway, I HAVE played it on a computer... but without having a spinner at the time, I didn't try and get it on my cab.

Tempest 2000 was released on the Atari Jaguar system, so using an emulator it's fairly easy to get it to work on a PC.
Tempest 3000 was only released on Nuon enabled DVD-players, so It probably won't be emulated for some time, I think it's a really rare game.

Funny you should mention this, I was updating the Console Emulators page on the BYOAC Wiki and cam accross Nuon for the first time. There is an emulator called Nuance, but I have no idea how well it runs or where you'd find Nuon games for sale.

I'm a huge Tempest fan.  How do the Tempest sequels stack up?  Is Tempest 2000 worth installing the Jaquar emulator?  Other than that and Tempest Tubes (which I think is kind of un-inspiring) are there any similar games that Tempest fanatics would like?

A demo of Tempest 2000 PC is available from The Underdogs

Juno Nemesis is another good Tempest inspired game.

Tempest 2000 is fun, but is hurt IMO because the Jaguar doesn't have a spinner. The author did include spinner support via a code. I did not like the way he implemented "Classic Tempest" mode, however.

My personal favorite Jaguar game is Rayman. I don't know if Rayman works with any emulator.
I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

I BOUGHT Tempest 2000 for PC when it came out and was solidly addicted to it for quite a while. It's an amazingly fun game even if played with just a gamepad.

I still have the CD-ROM, but it's a DOS game and I just can't get SOUND to work if I try running on XP. (HMMMM! I should install this sucker on my DOS MAME cab!!!)

No. It predates BYOAC. We're talking 1994/95.

Well I didn't realize Tempest 2000 was released for the PC, I need to check that out.  I have a Jaguar system with about 20 games (still have an unopened Alien vs. Predator) and the only game that I played a ton of was Tempest 2000.  It rocked, even if not having a spinner wasn't the greatest.  Great soundtrack for Tempest 2000 as well.

It's a shame 3000 wasn't released for the PC at all, hope someone with some skills can emulate at some point...  anyone play the playstation game ?

Tempest, any version, without a spinner is a waste IMO.

So can you run the Jag emu with Tempest 2000 and will it support the analog spinner?

I've run into the same problem. Opening a DOS prompt from Windows XP and running tempest.exe shows the 'Atari Interactive' title screen, then it craps out with a "No EMS!" error. I right clicked on tempest.exe, select Windows 95 compatability mode, selected 8mb of EMS, XMS and DMPI memory, but it doesn't fix it. I'm out of ideas.

Unless that game's been tweaked and balance for gamepad/keyboard play. Which is what Tempest 2000 is. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Have you tried dosbox?  http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

I've had good luck running old dos games under it.

I've got both the Jaguar Tempest 2000 and PSX Tempest X3 emulated on my cab. X3 is the clear winner. Clearer graphics, more colorful, better and longer music. Plays exactly the same except the addition of one or two new enemies.

Either one is great but X3 has the edge.

Jag is emulated by a program called Project Tempest, IIRC, and PSX is on epsxe.

Dosbox works for me, but the sound effects in the PC version are crappy compared to the Jaguar and, I assume, PSX versions of the game.  Have to get me a copy of that PSX version.

Also, I agree with RayB that the game is well tweaked for digital gameplay, but nowhere near the perfect control of the original Tempest.  Also, I can't figure out how the rotary cheat could enable full analog control when the original Jaguar didn't have an analog controller.

Great game, don't get me wrong.  I want it for my PSX.

Cheers,
KenToad

Well, I didn't have the patients to try Dosbox anymore... so I just went and bought it for PS1 off e-bay...    looking forward to comparing it to the Jag version....    I remember reading somewhere along the line that essentially if you hooked up an original atari indy controller (the one that didn't have a stop like the paddles) the code was built in to handle it....  I don't recall if you had to hack or could just plug it in.... I think its the same port.

Guess I'll have to find a Nuon machine at some point.

Sorry for dredging this one back up but i was wondering ( since i didnt really see a clear answer) does the jag emu Temp2000 work with a spiner? Or does the PSX one?

When I got my jag I could sit for 3-6 hours playing a single game of 2000 untill my fingers (or hould i say thumbs) hurt. Huge fan of tempest and after playing Old school I was looking at gettign the emulated stuff going, but if a spinner doesnt work, I just cant see playing on a joystick. Even though the Jag version was pretty sweet, with a spinner it would be even better IMHO.

jags didn't have spinners so probably no.  (wasn't this answered above??)

BUT the ps1 did have a mouse option didn't it??   Does X3 work with a mouse??

This seems like it might be a better way to go.  But if I can't use my spinner, I think I wouldn't play it.

Well I do know the Jag version had a secret menu that enabled a spinner (and you can buy them on E-bay). So I do know the Jag version did work with a spinner. But I'm wondering if the Emulated version does. If the PS one had mouse support that would be nice. Not that its that expensive to try, but can anybody confirm either working with a spinner?

sorry, i'm out of subject, but i read in this thread some post about the game  Ray man.

One asking if it works on a emulator.

You don't need an emulator to run Ray man  on a PC.  A very good PC version exists. (At least in France , it is a French game).

hello everybody

Ok, well I don't have the answers on above, but check out Tsunami 2010 (can be found by google pretty quick).  Its a really nice remake of Tempest 2000.
Runs great, you can even download the Tempest 2000 soundtrack for it.

I'm fairly sure above is right about T2K on the Jag, I did read somewhere you could use a spinner... now I may be completely nuts, but for some reason I think you can stick the old atari indy contollers into the port and they work (I may have dreamed this, my apologies if this proves to be way off base).

Here was a description from the Tsunami readme file

No you can't just plug one in.  What you do is hack a jaguar controller up to the indy controller.
