Top Gun lightgun LED strip through smoked glass?
« on: August 12, 2006, 12:34:31 pm »
Has anyone mounted the LED strips underneath the smoked glass on their cab?  I could easily punch holes in the cardboard bezel around the monitor, and mount the LED stips in there, but I'd want them underneath the front smoked glass....

I have a modified Neo-Geo 4 way cab with the original front glass covering the 25" WG monitor....  anyone hae any luck doing this?   or should I just go with the Act-Labs and be done with it?

Smoked Glass presents the same problem to the Act Labs guns as it does to the Topgun LCD Guns.  You're reducing the amount of light going through so why would you think that it's less of a problem for the Act Labs Ones??

That said..... The Topgun's work perfectly well through smoked glass. Several people are using them that way. The reason is that the stands produce infra-red light "not" visible light. So the smoked glass has very little effect on them.....  Take a look at the front of your video recorder, the IR reciever is usually mounted behind a piece of smoke coloured plastic.  So in fact the Act Labs guns, which use visible light, will actually perform worse than the Topguns in your application.

There's also nothing stopping you mounting the LED stands on this side of the glass if you don't mind seeing them.

Most bottles and jars contain at least twenty-five percent recycled Pacman.
And research indicates that Space Invaders are strongly attracted to people who have recently eaten meat pies.

Ahhh, I didn't realize the sed IR instead of visible light.  I just really started looking at the Top Gun guns today  :-)

How about re-load by shooting off the screen?  Does that work or is there a special reload button you have to hit on the top gun guns?

Yah, don't really want ot see the LED strips, thus the reason to hide them behind the glass....

  thanks!

Yes... off screen reload works on most games. There are a few exceptions to this in Mame and in PC games, but in general they work very well.
