blimey smoke everywhere, the 900 had a 4 wire plug mains input which should have 240ac for degauss and 120ac for monitor maybe your friend wired around the wrong way-take a picture of where the smoke came from otherwise we will be guessing for weeks
i suspect if its the voltage around the wrong way then your bridge rectifier circuit would have blown along with the mains smoothing cap and fuse
if its just a coincidence and the monitor was already faulty then look towards the horizontal output transistor or frame ic or flyback transformer

that is modified for the u.s market so disregard the 4 wire plug, yours just uses an isolated 110v ac input but still look for the bad solder joints

wow thats one old monitor, the pictures you posted don't show anything i would be concerned at,with something that age you have to look for bad solder joints and at worst the flyback transformer-by the look of your chassis it seems it may have been stored somewhere damp

very difficult to see but the red lead from the flyback to the anode cap on the tube looks burnt,is this the case?if so you will need a new flyback transformer(if you have any damage on this lead it will arc across to any metal work blue sparks

first time i have ever seen a yoke smoke ;Di reckon your anode lead was arcing to the yoke deflection plates making it look like the yoke
