Moon over Mortal Kombat
« on: July 22, 2006, 01:18:30 pm »
One of my favorites is the original MK. I recall in the arcades, on the PIT stage, you'd occasionally see a shadow fly across the moon (a witch? Santa? both? I don't recall). Anyway, I've never seen this when running MK in MAME. Is there a setting or only a certain version with this?

In the last few revisions of MK (rev3-5?), the shadows DO fly by on the Pit and you can fight Reptile, but I don't believe it happens every time you play that level.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to be undefeated up until that stage and it was (as mentioned above) only in the later revisions.

Don't quote me on that though as I have yet to see Reptile on my cab playing rev5

To fight reptile you have to beat everyone upuntil that stage (flawless I think) and fatality them all.  I'm not sure about the shadows in the arcade though (I defintely remember them on the Genesis version).

From Wikipedia:

Quote
Reptile was hidden in the original Mortal Kombat but could be fought by executing a Fatality after fighting on The Pit stage, assuming a shadow flew over the moon in the background, without taking any damage or pressing the block button in the winning round (this means in most cases that Liu Kang, Scorpion and Sonya cannot fight him at all, although experienced players can in most versions execute Liu Kang and Scorpion's fatalities without using the block button). Reptile is a merge between the Sub-Zero and Scorpion characters. Later, in Mortal Kombat II, Reptile was developed into a full character with his own special moves and would be available from the outset. In the final official release version of Mortal Kombat any fighter could fight Reptile.
