Using artwork/intro movies from different MAME version
« on: July 19, 2006, 01:46:11 pm »
I have a cabinet up and running with MameWAH and MAME v0.87 (tried v1.06, but couldn't get the trackball working).

I would like to display intro movies instead of screen shots in MameWAH, and have started downloading the intro movie torrent file referenced in the sticky.

A few questions:

I'm pretty sure I can handle the .ini file edits, but will I have to modify the layout to display movies instead of screens?

If a particular ROM doesn't have an associated movie, can the screen be displayed instead?

Will there be any conflict from using MAME v0.87 with v1.06 intro movies (or screens)?

Also, is there anything advantage to using the NIVO screens instead of those that came with my rom set (from mamedvds.com)?

Thanks

Can't answer most of your questions, but when it comes to screenshots and movies, the version number only refers to whether or not it has images for all of the titles of the latest version. As long as it has the same file name as the rom, it will display just fine.

mamewah's layout editor is pretty straight forward, just choose one of the artwork windows to match what you have set in the ini - have a good read of http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mamewah

Generally if the game doesn't have a video it's because the game either doesn't work (which is the majority of them) or there is a small bug which causes mame to crash during the capture process.  I don't think displaying the screenshot instead of the missing vid is possible, however you can set the layout to show both of them.  There will be no conflict however some videos may not be displayed if the rom name has been changed or if something was changed from clone to parent etc.  It won't cause any crashes.

I'm not sure what screenshots you got with the dvds, if they are all there and look good then stick with them - although it's not a big download to get NIVO's ones.

Not true...generally speaking you have an artwork box show a screenshot, and after 'delay_before_movie_preview' (in mamewah.ini) seconds the movie plays.  So if no movie exists the screenshot will remain.

If you don't generally want screenshots to show, you could set the above delay to be very short so you wouldn't notice the screenshots too much...in reality the time for the movie to load may mean you still see the screenshot briefly.

Man, that was so easy... all I had to do was edit the .ini files to point to the right directory, and MameWAH did the rest.  Changing the screensaver to movies was a piece of cake, too.

Awesome program Minwah!!
