Virtua Fighter Help
« on: July 05, 2006, 10:57:31 am »
Hey all,

I have a non-working model one virtua fighter and I'm reaching out to this community for a little help.  This board has offered me a wealth of useful information over the past couple of years with my previous mame projects, however this is the first time I've felt the need to directly ask for a little help (also being the first time I've tried to revive a non-working machine!)

My current situation is...

- I power it on and I get nothing, although the fan's working so I assumed there's power going through it...
- After cracking open the back I see everything seems to be getting power, as I'm getting leds lighting up on the main board, the sound board and a little orange glow on the back of the monitor.
- If I disconnect the wires that run up the left by the game board and into the monitor, the monitor will come on.  It's a white screen with some rolling grey lines, but hey, it comes on!
- I've testing the voltages from the power supply and I'm getting just over 5v on the 5v line, but nearly 14.5v off the 12v.  Should this be?!
- Also, I read somewhere that the row of 2 lots of 5 leds on the game board indicated something.  When I power on, I get them all coming on apart from the one labelled led 10 (the farthest-right red one).

I'm not a complete muppet when it comes to electronics, just being the first time I've attempted something like this I'm not sure where to start!

Any help will be greatly appreciated, ta!

look at connections and eprom seatings on the game board,a good thing to try first is power on your machine and give it a credit to see if it plays blind(that will prove if its a signal or monitor fault)

Are you able to put it in test mode (likely a switch located behind the coin door) ?

You'll also want a copy of the manual (if you don't have one):

http://www.crazykong.com/manuals/VirtuaFighter.man.pdf

I can't seem to find a manual for the Model 1 system, though, which is where I would look for info on the LEDs. I checked my normal places and Sega's service site and came up empty.

You might be able to find more info at System16:

http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=712

Based on what I read in this thread, red LEDs are bad.

GGKoul has some Model 1 games (IIRC), perhaps he has a Model 1 system manual.

Cheers.

Ok, I gave the board a good clean (there was some nasty filth on that thing!) and checked for dodgy connections, but still nothing.

When I pop a coin in, I can hear the coin mech working, but I get nothing from the game and the button for test mode does nothing either.

The red leds on the board must indicate bad things, if I turn the 5v gain on the power supply up a little too much then that last one lights up.

Hmmmmmm.........

Yes.  Get a digital multimeter and CHECK the readings.  Don't just crank up your voltage without knowing what the voltage is already at!

At the board, I was getting 5.12v and 12.17v.  I take it it's not a power issue then...?

Depends. Some boards need up to 5.4 to run.

i think gonna have to face facts that your game board is in the workshop in the sky, unless you can find a god to fix it.

That's what I thought too.  My Virtua Fighter board is now resting peacefully in a cardboard coffin in the attic!

Thanks for trying to help though guys, much appreciated!
