That cocktail is awesome, the 27" monitor is insane. Also nice to see someone else running Linux and advmame on their cocktail :)

Whammocade...Monitor Mounting
« Reply #41 on: July 22, 2004, 09:37:28 am »
jakobud, here is the photo of the monitor mounting I promised.  2x4s where ripped down to the right height and attached to the top with glue, screws, and dowels.  The monitor is mounted with 6 #12 screws that are long enough to go all the way into the top of the cabinet.  Aluminum angle and flat bar was used to make braces between the top and side of the cabinet for extra support when the cabinet is open.

Bracket for agp and pci cards:
This is for those of us who have to (or just prefer to) mount computer components directly in the cabinet without a computer case.  I stole this idea from johnnyz and although it is not completely necessary it adds a nice touch.  Take a length of aluminum flat bar, make a few bends, drill a few holes and you've got a nice support for those cards that would otherwise be rather floppy.  If you have access to a machine shop for bending great!  If you don't, no worries, aluminum that is 1/8" or less thick bends without too much trouble.  Just clamp it in a vice where it needs to be bent and strike it with a hammer near the vice while pulling the aluminum flat bar in the direction of the bend.  For the holes that hold down the cards, use a bit just slightly smaller than the threads of the screws you want to use.  The aluminum is soft enough that the screws will make their own threads the first time you screw it in.

wow - and i thought my 21" monitor was too heavy to mount like that.

but with all those fans isn't it a bit noisy?

suppose you just turn up the volume  ;D

Its not any louder than a normal PC is.  I guess with them inside the big wood box it muffles the noise a bit.  Since I am running a prescott core P4 (they tend to run hot) and I don't want to give the d9200 any excuses to break, I thought I would go with plenty of fans.  It does however on occasion start to hover across the room. ;D

whammoed - Your coktail cabinet is absolutely PHEONOMENAL.  I love cocktail cabinets but have never really contemplated making one as my my own personal arcade experiences were always with uprights (played a few cocktails in pubs but that's about it)...but I have now seen the light.  I've seen several outstanding examples on this site and your's is right up there at the zenith of cab creation!

That cabinet is sheer GENIUS mate - Well done and have a Pint! As others have said it is without a shadow of a doubt, hall of fame material

Whammocade...costruction photo
« Reply #46 on: July 30, 2004, 11:03:43 am »
Here is a construction pic of the cabinet really starting to come together.  I had enough 3/4 plywood for the top but Midway style tables have a 1" top.  To remedy this I laminated some 1/4" hardboard to it using tight bond II.  It turned out really nice, in fact better quality than my first cab that used actual 1" plywood.  I had bought a full sheet of the 1" stuff for my first cab but the way I had it cut there weren't any pieces left over big enough for the new table.  Just as well though as the high quality plywood the new one is made of is nicer and has fewer voids, and the hardboard makes a nice smooth surface for the underlay graphics to lay on.
Someone was very upset when I sold my first cocktail and the freight company came to pick it up.  Once he saw what was going on out in the garage his spirits lifted.   His dinosaur looks pretty happy about it too. ;D

whammoed your cocktail is gogeous.  I've been planning an upright, but after I saaw yours I'm seriously reconsidering.  Your monitor mount is simply ingenious.  Truly you have inspired me.

One more thing.  I love your artwork.  I've have a galaga inspired cpo designed as well.  If it is OK with you I'd like to use your idea of incorporating classic arcade figures into the design.  My CPO is completely different than your design now, but any incorporation of characters would be directly inspired by you design

It was my idea to incorporate some of my favorite characters into the design, but i'm not so sure how original that is.  3dmacman came up with the galaga themed graphics and layout so the hard work credit goes to him.  Anyway, of course I don't have a problem with it.  In fact if its ok with 3dmacman, i don't have a problem sharing the final artwork with anyone who may want it.  Thanks for the compliments and good luck on your project.

Thanks!
Bigger = Better, right? ;D
Seriously though, I would warn anyone considering a monitor bigger than 27" that it may not be better.  After playing on this one I think there is definitely a limit to how big a monitor should be for a cocktail due to the ergonomics of playing from a seated position.  You need to be able to see the other side of the monitor at an angle. (unless you want to play standing up)  I don't have any problem with the 27" but I did notice I have adjusted my chairs a little higher for a better viewing angle.  What is the limit then?  Well, I don't know, 27" seems ok to me so maybe 33" will be ok as well but there is definitely a limit, just as their is a limit for an upright. (You don't use a 50" projection for a regular cab, you make a showcase cab for that)  I would definitely recommend against the 39" D9200, although I'd love to see it done, I don't think it would be comfortable to play.

I added a section at the end of the build page on my website concerning trackball lighting.  I know this topic has been covered plenty but I haven't seen anyone do it exactly like I did so I thought I'd share.  Check it out:

just seen this in your website:

"Got the 3/4 inch Oak veneer plywood from Home Depot along with some hardware. Cabinet is assembled using dowels and wood glue with metal brackets to reinforce everything. I laminated some 1/4" hardboard to the plywood for the 1" top."

i'm currently building a cocktail and using oak veneeered MDF - in hindsight i wish i used plywood - mdf is just too heavy.

i also should have figured out the + 1/4" hardboard solution. I ended up buying sheet of 1" MDF just for the table top and now will end up having loads left over. not much you can do with 1" sheet wood.  plus the weight - ouch!

also...just realised that it must have been your website (the first cocktail you had) that inspired me to make a cocktail in the first place!

Yeah, I bought some 1" plywood for the first one.  I ended up making 1 extra top for my buddy and the rest I used for a big sturdy shelf in my garage so it all worked out OK.  Having done it both ways I would probably stick with the laminated hardboard to cut down on the extra expense and extra wood.  Another option is to laminate two 1/2" pieces of plywood together.  I believe that is what scott at arcadedepot does for his kits.

Is the writeup on installing advmame on linux just for general or did you use that method as well. Just wondering why you wouldn't use emerge for most everything with gentoo.

I also have advmenu.rc and advmame.rc files that I'll send anyone who wants them.

The height is pretty standard for a Midway style table.  Without leg levelers the height from the bottom to top of glass is 29".  So with the levelers installed it is around 30".  The rest of the general dimensions can be found at the bottom of:

Whammocade...slight upgrade
« Reply #66 on: January 09, 2005, 07:29:47 pm »
Just thought I'd post a recent (small) upgrade.  I have the 1 & 2 start buttons on the front of the cab also wired to the 1&2 mouse buttons on my optipac which is fine except when I want to enter my desktop (KDE) and do some configuring.  At this point every time I try to left or right click the mouse, and the cursor is somewhere text can be entered, I get a "3" or "4" entered.(1&2 start are "3" and "4" on the front panel)  Unplugging the IPAC is an option but a bit of a pain so I added a DPDT switch easily accessible through the coin door to switch those two buttons between the optipac and IPAC.  It was easy and it works great.
Heres a pic.

This cab is awesome.  After several months of delay I'm finally getting around to building my cocktail - I welcomed a brand new baby girl into the world back in September and it is tough trying to get things back to "normal."  I'm modeling my cab after the whammocade (as much as possible) and I think I can actually begin this weekend.  I bought the plywood and I think I've settled on a design.  I'm sure things will change once I actually get going but I am excited to start.  I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration!

Whammoed:  Can you post a link to a place where I can buy the Molex Microfit 3.0 connectors you used for witing your CPs (or something very similar)?  The link on your site just brings you to the company's home page and I can't seem to find them.  Those allow you to quickly disconnect your CPs, right?  I am looking to do something like that in my cab.

Thanks!!!

Thanks!!!
