Steering Wheel Module #9- for Mame
« on: June 14, 2006, 06:56:13 pm »
Well another day another module!

This module was actually an "accident". I was working on a trade with MarksVP and one item he offered to me was a Happ 270 wheel.
I thought it would be cool to have so we did the trade. He also was good enough to include an AKI board and even wired up the wheel for me to the AKI.

I picked up a new Happ Hi/Lo (return to center -- http://www.happcontrols.com/driving/50811000.htm) shifter and accelerator-- (http://www.happcontrols.com/driving/50819400.htm FYI-- for some reason the photo is of the pedal upside down so you're seeing the bottom of it) to finish out my new steering wheel module.
As you can see I used my basic Star Wars Module design for the "box" (it works!...so why change it?--- http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=29208.msg244528) to house the wheel, shifter, start button and a combo turbo or brake button depending on my needs).

I skipped a brake (as I can always add an actual pedal to it if I want to) since I have the extra red button on the panel I can configure to act as a brake but to be honest I never used it EVER in the arcades anyway.
....bottom line....Module 9 is awesome and works really great with Outrun and many more! I haven't had the chance to play Outrun on a real cab in years...and having a wheel makes all the difference!

Enjoy the pics!

Excellent.  I'm glad to see somebody actually using that wheel.  I had grand plans, but alas I got sidetracked.

so... about that steering wheel.

I used a mouse hack - is there anything like your steering wheel available for a cab like mine? I like the 360 wheel, but I like how solid yours looks.

it's a Happ 270 wheel with an AKI PCB hooked up via USB.

It works perfectly!...and was super easy to wire up.

Maybe you can somehow make yours module based...so you can swap 'em out?

I would have gone w/a 360 but I had a soft spot for Outrun and wanted that the most. Except for the missing force feedback this wheel emulates the "feel" of Outrun/Outrunners perfectly.

I was very pleased to discover just how many games this works well with too....but I admit, I would have liked to be able to play Super Sprint......oh well, you can have 'em all.
Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

question:

Was there a reason you didn't go with the turbo button on the shifter? Did you already have the hi-lo shifter?

I didn't feel the need to get it....only because I thought that a "special" Turbo button was cooler...and I liked the handle of the high/low shifter (non turbo).....

...also the AKI (which I used) needs to see a micro switch...not a Pot....so it worked best for me to go with that one.

I'm sure there would have been a way around that if I wanted to find one....

My mistake - I see it on the cab now!
