Video Cable Length Limitations
« on: May 23, 2006, 06:16:04 pm »
Can anyone tell me how long a video cable can be without having to get something like a repeater?  Any difference between analog and digital cable limitations?

What is the video cable for?  Your PC? Your TV? Your arcade monitor?
What is the desired cable length you want to run?

It is for an industrial process control and monitoring system.  We will have two PCs running two flat panel monitors each.  The towers will be appoximately 50' from the monitors.  So I was wondering what the difference between analog and digital signal cables would be when talking a 50' run.

I'll check what we are doing at work.  I think our runs were like 20 foot or so.  I will check on what kind of KVM switch we have at work.  I think it ran over ethernet.

I read you can do rca or svideo over ethernet with some sort of video to ethernet balun (spelling) they were like $150 a piece and you needed one for each end.  I think they are made or sold at smart home.

I don't know the specific answer to your question, but I'd think you'd be okay.

I know I've used 25 ft component cables in my home video setup and didn't have any issues. I bought them from a site called monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com). Good prices and I got the stuff pretty quick.

Anyway, a quick glance at their site shows they sell 100ft SVGA monitor cables, 50 ft composite cables and 100ft component cables.

So again, I doubt you'd have any problems.

Thanks for the input.  Any idea of the limitations between analog and digital?
