first lost 'tab', then usb joystick in mame
« on: December 05, 2006, 06:59:03 am »

not on my machine. but a friends. some months ago the dipswitch 'tab' stopped working. very odd, but we could still play games. last week i was showing him a new gamepad and we realised that usb joys stopped working too  >:( . the buttons still work, but not the d-pad functions. now id actually forgotten about it until today when i was experimenting with selecting 'hotrod', 'slickstick' etc in the default options. you actually get the same effect selecting 'hotrod' and using a gamepad. that is- buttons work, but no directionals. i texted my friend to see if that was the case, but it wasnt.

so.... any thoughts? he has xp, was running v78 mame32. i installed v90 mame32 (was the easiest to get at that point). i saved all the old files. i wonder if one of them is actually the problem. if so, which ones can he safely delete? might be hard to relay this, but i can point him to this thread so he can check out any possible solutions. any other possible causes?

Start by deleting all the *.cfg files in the cfg folder.  (If you did a lot of remapping, you can back them up first.)  That should fix the tab problem (it's a FAQ over at mame.net).  Hopefully it will help with the directions, too, but you might need to remap (use "Input (general)" to apply to all games).  If directions can't even be remapped, let us know.

Note that mame has gone through a few changes in the inputs, so the 0.78 might not work with 0.90, and most likely not with 0.110.
