I bought a finish nail gun.  I figure most of what I'll do around the house is molding, etc.  A dewalt, holds a good number of finish nails.

For framing, heavy duty work, I bought a palm nailer for $79.  It can drive like 3 inch nails or something sick like that.  You have to load it one at a time, so it's cheaper than a full fledged framing gun.

I don't have a brad nailer, but I do have an electric staple gun that kicks some ass with staples.

Start with a finish nailer.  Once you have one, you'll buy others.  I have five different kinds.

Yeah, your finish nailer can use several different sizes.  Start with that.  A brad nailer is nice to use during glue-ups and light assembly, but a finish nailer can be used for the same thing and more sturdy usage.

You'll also be able to find brad nailers lying around for cheap too.  I DO NOT recommend getting an electric or battery powered one.  Cheap versions don't drive them consistently enough (or at times, deep enough), and the more expensive versions (I think Paslode is the only one who makes the cell-powered ones, but others may have jumped into the fray) are gonna be WAY more expensive than you should pay for your first gun.

Once you've picked up a finish nailer, just do yourself a favor and pick up a cheap brad nailer at Harbor Freight (should be about $15-20) to see if you'll even need anything better than that.  A nice Bostitch should run you about $50.
