Alternatives to phpBB?
« on: March 31, 2006, 11:20:18 pm »
Are there any other forum packages available other than phpBB? I want to set up a forum on my own hosting service, but phpBB is too limited. I'd perfer something like Invisionfree, but I don't want to deal withn their hosting. Any other options, other than learning PHP and building my own?

As a forum whore, my absolute favorite package based solely as a user is vBulletin: http://www.vbulletin.com/

Not clue if it's too limited for your purposes, though.

Thats cool, but its also $170. This is for a Star Trek RPG that has a 50/50 chance of failure. anything free?

This site uses Simple Machines forum board.  http://www.simplemachines.org/.  Good news is that it is free.

Another free forum board is punbb.  http://punbb.org/.  It is also free.  It is a lightweight forum, but has plenty of plugins.

I can tell one to avoid for sure is wwwboard. That one is a spammers paradise as it has so many security holes and flaws.

Have you checked out infopop.com and their UBB classic?

Right now, I've got Simple Machine installed. I need to see if it has enough flexibility for my purposes. Much better than phpBB so far though

Not sure what your looking for, so it's hard to suggest.  If you want Invision, it's going to cost you.  It's $185.  You might want to check out VBulletin, it's $160. Ubuntuforums.org uses that as their forums.  It definitly can handle the load.

Invision uses PHP and MySQL.  That's what most boards use.

Also, check out www.opensourcecms.com.  They have demos to try out.

I picked up the Invision system. I got it really cheap, if you know what I mean. >:D

if you can host it in Windows and have access to SQL Server, you could do Community Server (http://communityserver.com/) and use those forums (and any of the other stuff if you wanted it)
