Is my Ikari Warriors PCB dead? Help needed.
« on: March 24, 2006, 04:33:41 pm »
Hi...

I bought this board a while back and haven't been able to test it until now.
I made my first JAMMA adapter for it, it seemed straight forward enough...

However, when I plug it in, I get a picture like this:

there doesn't appear to be a graphics test switch on the board:
http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=dip&page=IkariWarriors.txt

the board is a bit dusty, but no more than other boards i've had in the past.

could it be:

a/ the board is duff
b/ bad dip switching (i have checked)
c/ bad JAMMA adapter (i made myself)
d/ something else?

please help me, i wanna play this so bad. =(

thanks.

If you got 5,12,-5 and common in the right place it ain't your jamma,it looks like a graphic rom fault, but check your 5v is good at the jamma(about 5.10v),make sure all you dips are off,and check eprom and board connectors are home correctly.

sorry, one thing i forgot to mention, is that it's running off a small supergun unit with a small PSU... could that make a difference? other games seem fine on it though.

thanks. i'll check the connections you've mentioned.

i checked all the removable ROMs and all the contacts seem strong.

however, i've come to understand that the supergun i'm using does not supply -5 which i'm guessing the gameboard requires when i put together the JAMMA adapter.

is it then a safe assumption to make that this is the cause of the problem? how can i find out for sure that the game requires -5 ?

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

-5v was mainly used for sound applications, you need an edge connector pinout of your ikari board to be certain.

hi grantspain,

thanks for your response.

that's what i mean, it does. when i made the JAMMA adapter, i had to wire the -5VDC pin from the 22/44 edge connector from Ikari Warriors to JAMMA. so even though it might be for sound, could it still have this effect on the game if it's not supplied by the supergun?

sorry, newbie here.

The jamma connector was introduced as an industry standard connector, wether your board needed -5 or not did not matter as the board edge connector would control that, now there is a possibility that -5 could be needed for the graphics therefore you could have a problem with it disconnected(i think -5 should be on pins 5&e),don't know what a supergun unit is,but i would always have a good switch mode psu running the jamma because of load requirements and voltage overload/short issues. That psu you have running it at the moment don't sound man enough for the job.
If you had all your voltages correct and i saw that fault then i would put it down to very low 5v or a graphic rom fault.

looks good to me,if you have further graphics problems just check your +5v at the jamma (board side) ,you need about 5.10 or slightly less-anyway congrats on getting it working, ikari is a truly classis game and i hope you have many happy hours playing it :applaud:
