Unlike some of the modern systems, I don't recall PS1 varying that much. I remember the progression as Mod Chip to Stealth Mod Chip with few variances between. I modded mine around the time that Metal Gear Solid came out (1998) and only had problems when I purchased Dino Crisis (and a few years later Strider 2, which has the art for part 1 on part 2, and vice versa, part 2 being the only one of the two disks anti-mod protected). I'm pretty sure that most PS1 mod chip salesmen used the same code until a new update was available. It didn't seem as competitive as the Xbox market has been.
