You could remap your keboard keys using ZD net's totally free Tradekeys2 utility available at the website below:

You can use this application to make your mame specific controls compatable with any emulator or game.
I can't think of any reason that you would not be happy with Tradekeys2.
It actually allows you to save different keymap profiles.
I've created one for Z26, one for Stella, one for Impact (yes I know that Impact already allows you to configure keys however coin 1, player 1, & fire 2 are not configurable to the corresponding mame keys), one for MK4 PC version, etc...
It is also claims to be compatible with Win2k & XP, though I have only tested it in 98se.
