Can you change NBA JAM to 2 player?
« on: February 02, 2006, 09:40:32 pm »
I play NBA JAM in mame and have only a two player  control panel. I know I can change the controls in the TAB menu  but is there a way to make the game 2 player not 4 player? I thought there was a switch on the board in the arcade to do such a thing.

Is it in the F2 menu maybe? Im not at home to test this out but maybe someone knows if you can do this.

Also how do you switch between your players while playing the game? Can you do this?

IIR, you can only switch players in the console ports, not in the arcade.

As far as "two player" -- I believe that the "second player" is set up to be the first player on the opposing team, right?  So you should be able to play head-to-head without remapping.  I could be wrong about that.

No, unfortunately it is set to where player 2 is the second player on team 1. What I was thinking you could do is put coin in player 3 (7?) and then remap the player 2 controls to the player 3 tab menu controls. Make sense or am I off base with whether that would work?
I've got a fever...

Ah, maybe I'm thinking of NBA Hangtime then, I usually play that instead of Jam, my bad.

I figured it out! Go to the input menu (TAB). there you will find where you can change the dip switches. One of the switches changes it from a 4 player game to a 2 player game.  You have to keep the controls set as 1 and 2 and not remapped for this to work.

This works with all version of NBA JAM, Hangtime and T.E.

It kinda sucks you cant switch players.

Ah, so I wasn't crazy, must have done that on my machine, as I know NBA Jam is playable on my 2-player cabinet, and I was fairly sure I didn't remap any controls.

As far as switching players... don't be a Kobe Bryant... pass the ball once in a while and use some teamwork! ;)

I will try not to be Kobe. Thats a good one.

I used to map the contols but had the problem that somehow something happened that player 2 or 4 would enter the game, even though the start to them wasnt mapped to a button on the panel. Annoying to say the least.

There are alot of options in that menu though.  You can raise the volume (machine stock is way to quiet!), or switch it to free play, big head mode, reset scores, see stats of everything from money in the machine to teams picked and amount of quarters played compared to each other.  They also have Turny mode but I havent checked it out yet.
