they don't seem to use sdl under win32 environment. Try to investigate windows.c / input.c in the drivers/win directory.
They seem to use standard windows messaging system and it looks all right in the reading process.You have to see what they do with the data after that (take a look at input.c).

*EDIT: I Removed the exe since it did not work*

they don't use SDL in win32? woops..... I read somewhere on the site it was used and just assumed....

thanks for the pointers, will take another look...

Well after playing three nights in a row I fired up the cabinet to a non-working gun/driver. I am using Smog's driver. I have been messing with it for 3 hours with no luck. The weird thig is that when I calibrate in Windows the laser will go out sometimes on certain parts of the screen. These are usually a 1" wide stripe from the bottom edge to the top edge of the monitor. I did notice that the cors for the gun has a pinch in it where my CP top must have fallen closed on it. I am wondering if I damaged the wiring. However, when the laser goes out if I wiggle the wire it still does not come back on in that one area. The weird thing is that nothing has changed.

Also weird is that the settings from the control panel don't seem to want to write to my registry. When I do a search for "RightEdge" as Smog mentioned everything says DWORD not ..... something or other. It is really weird. I expected to see numeric values?

Now I am stuck trying to calibrate again using Smog's control panel and mouse pointer issues. I have rebooted about ten or twelve times. What a pain in the arse this is. For starters I am going to order a new gun to rule out the cable.

Any other ideas about the disappearing laser pointer guys?

When your laser goes out, can you hit the start/select buttons together and the laser come back on? My gun apparently had a short in it...EMS replaced it free of charge. And 'free of charge' meant I had to pay for shipping to and from Hong Kong...I wish they had the guns at the local bestbuy :)

Well, it's working now. I may have been standing to far from the monitor. I am not sure. When I said the laser went out it was just for a split second in certain strips of the monitor. All seems well now. However, these drivers sure need some work. I think it's time for Smog to the rescue. It seems most of our hope lies in him for a good driver.

Well, it is working then. Try to double click on the value and you will see a number ... the fact that windows does not understand it does not mean it is not valid for driver ;)

Thank you for clarifying that issue. Everything is working now with your driver except a button mapping which I am scared to change due to the losing of the mouse issue. I will use it the way it is for a while and wait for an update.

Thanks again,

the update will be available soon ... give me max a week.
However the button mapping is easy to change ... double click on a ButtonXX in the registry key you've found and you will see a two bytes number 0x 00 change the x to whatever mouse button you want (ranging from 0 to 5 where 0 is the left mouse button, 1 is the right and then the others .. ) The buttons number is sequenced in the order you see on the control panel .. for lcd gun the order is :

Button1   =  Main Trigger
Button2   =  Button B on the gun
Button3   =  lower trigger (labelled as C on the gun)
Button4   =  select
Button5   =  start
Button6   =  Button A on the gun
Button7   =  DPAD up on the gun
Button8   =  DPAD down on the gun
Button9   =  DPAD left on the gun
Button10   =  DPAD  right on the gun

You can even use values greater then 5 for assigning to the mouse wheel up or mouse wheel down or other extra functions but I think you don't need them

regarding the edges :
Clicking on an edge in the registry will give you two hex bytes. To change the value you can follow this procedure (This is specially important on win2k where the cpl does not seem to work at all):
Let's suppose you need to set the leftEdge value to 160

1) convert 160 to hex (using windows calculator in scientific mode) it is 00 A0
2) double click on LeftEdge in the registry
3) write A0 00 (bytes are swapped)
4) you're done

Has anyone noticed any effect of bright lighting (sunshine) and the guns seeing the LED's on the stands. After spending three hours setting this BACK UP last evening and playing successfully (it was after dark when it started working), I booted the cabinet today and the Windows calibration was all jumpy and jittery. My cabinet sets right beside a sliding glass door in my basement and the sunshine was coming into the room VERY brightly. I am suspecting this may be an issue. I will know in about 8 hours.

Any thoughts,
John

Well the intense sunshine was it. A heavy blanket over the sliding glass doors and a quick calibration in Windows and everything is perfect again.

Do these guns work 2 player on pc at all at this point?, or with any type of mame at this point?  I use MAME32, and I tried DOSMAME once and couldn't figure it out.  Thanks.

bright celing light (especially shining behind the LED stands) also affects it.

BTW you didnt need to re-caliberate

Well, I did because I did not know what the problem was and calibrated with the sunshine affecting the visability of the stands. So I did a recal to get things right again.

SMOG,
     What do I need to do in the registry to turn off screen flashing. When I launch the control panel all of the buttons are unchecked and in the lower right I have flashing set to none but it still flashes. I need the flasher running for my button mappings (this should be changed). Even in the flasher, under settings everything is unchecked. However, everytime I try to update something I loose my mouse and am not sure the changes are being written to the registry. I am using XP SP2.

Thanks,
John

you don't need the flasher for button mapping ... maybe you meant for keys mapping on mouse button ? GunCon2Flasher is the last program in the suite that need to be fixed, everything else is ready for release....

I have Mame32Plus, do those Silverfoxy directions apply to me, so far, using Gun2Mouse, all I have gotten is the mouse pointer to move, from there I don't know what to do, and I am also concerned about getting 2 guns working almost as much as I am getting 1 gun working.

Well, Silver says that, and I quote:

"Reportedly Wingun does not work with Mame32."

I would say that since Mame32Plus is a derivitive of Mame32, if his comment is correct, no.

I read somewhere that that was not true for Plus, and he doesn't only have wingun in there, he has Gun2Mouse, but either way, can I ask you a basic question, what is Mame 104u5, is that a dosmame or is it more like a frontend or something, because in my head if that has dual mouse support and I setup 2 lightguns as mice that would work?

Does anyone know any information about how these work with Mame32?

can I ask you a basic question, what is Mame 104u5, is that a dosmame or is it more like a frontend or something,

Mame version tutorial:

If you go here:

http://www.mame.net/downmain.html

You will see basically two versions of Mame. A Windows commandline version and a DOS version. That is all there is. All others are derivitives of those two. Mame32 happens to be a modified version of the Windows commandline version with a Windows GUI attached to make it more user friendly in a Windows environment. Most of us use the Windows commandline version and our own front-end of choice such as MameWAH, Ultrastyle, AtomicFE or one of the many others.

As far as what wil work and what won't I am not sure.

wingun drivers make the second buttons show up as button 3 and 4 on mouse 1.  So you can get it to work.

but to get it working with full tracking for both still requires analog+ mame and other drivers (it does work and is fun)

Mame needs that the trigger of the lightgun was mapped to the first mouse button, and the reload button was the second one.

If you want to play with 2 guns, you need to remap the trigger and the reload button of the gun to the thrid and fourth mouse button and enable the dual_lightgun.

Actually Derrick is working on a better new lightgun driver for mame from scratch.

Remember, when using mamewah as a shell you need to run (and close)  troubleshooter (for pc titles) and wingun.exe before launching each gun game. However If you dont close wingun.exe cleanly after playing your gun game and carry on using your cab for other purposes/types of game (With wingun being launched each time without being closed), eventually the gun will die (dont know why).

I see there's a new beta on Smogs site as of today.

My two guns are on their way to me from Play Asia, so looking foward to them.  For now, just soaking up as much knowledge as I can!

So, why you still reading this?  Go get the drivers and tell me if they work good!   :laugh:

Good to know. I'm expecting my gun in the next 2 or 3 days, and am shooting just to get the Mame (w/mamewah) stuff working at this point.
I browsed through some of the other pages of the thread for 'beginners tips', but 30+ pages of stuff is just WAY to much to sort through.
Is there anything written in CONCRETE about these guns that is documented somewhere out of the 30+ pages of this thread?
These guns look great but the length of this thread make it look VERY intimidating!
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

Hi all. New to this forum. Got my two Topguns and I love them. Mostly playing HOTD 2 and 3 at the moment. I have noticed an odd issue though. If I boot my machine with one or both plugged in, it boots really slowly. Even going into my BIOS settings, the screen draws painfully slowly. The fact that it affects the initial boot process means it can't be drivers. In fact, once Windows is up, it's all fine. Has anyone else noticed this?

I may be being paranoid, but I had a hard disk die a week after installing the guns. Anyone else having hardware problems?

Incidentally, I first tried to install the LED strips horizontally and had no luck at all. When it would calibrate, the accuracy was terrible. I wouldn't recommend ordering these guns if horizontal mounting is your only option.

Update online. Who should update : I suggest to download the whole package to users with LCD guns running XP. Users running 98 and 2K will find a a better support in the driver but I did not test the control panel under those OS yet so they'd better download the .sys only (I made available it for download separately)

I should have solved some bugs in control panel and added support for LCD gun in the driver. No modification yet oin the flasher application, still working on it.

P.S.:
I've lost the beta 2 package in the transfer, if anyone has got it backed up please email me.

Hey smog. Are there any advantages to us who own a guncon2 with this new driver?

@vibez:
Shoot off screen should be improved and guncon2cpl is less buggy ... But you better wait the next major release unless you own an LCD gun also.

Try to disable the USB mouse / USB keyboard support and boot from USB devices in the bios or update it
