I like the way you think !

Things are going to be crazy here in Pittsburgh.  I just hope they don't
choke this time.  It would be nice for "The Bus" to retire with a Super Bowl ring.

Agreed, I'm in Pittsburgh as well and the fans are rabid. I'm psyched.
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

As a Charlotte native I'm very disappointed with my panthers performance in the NFC championship game.   :'(

I've already requested the 6th off so I can watch my Steelers.

My wife feels like she's on another planet when we visit my family in the burgh.  Even during the offseason Steeler pride is displayed proudly all over the area.  She's from San Antonio where you only pay attention to sports when the Spurs are in the playoffs.

I want the Seahawks to win because they haven't won a superbowl yet and those dang Steelers stole a superbowl win from my Vikings. :'(
I predict the score will be Seahawks 21 to Steelers 17.

Its also obvious that Bill Cowher is also a great coach!  GOOOOOO STEELERS!

On a side note.....   can you believe that Big Ben is only 23!!!!   I can't imagine playing in the superbowl in only his 2nd year in the league at that age!!!!    No pressure....  I wonder if he is just too naive to realize that he isn't supposed to play this well at this early point of his career!  He looked like a 10 year vetern against the Bronco's

yeah cowhler only went to the superbowl once.... and lost!   but he has taken the steelers to the AFC championship 6 times in like 12 or 14 years which is pretty damn good imho....   granted going 2-4 in the AFC championship isn't something to brag about

I wonder just how many times this is for Holmgren going to the Super Bowl?  I know this is his 3rd time as head coach, but how many times total?

It might not be 'One for the Thumb', but a 5th Super Bowl victory for the Steelers would be sweet nonetheless.

not knowing much about american football, i just ckiked on the one i liked the name of, seahawks (i think i closed my eyes and clicked) i do like watching american football but i dont understand the rules, i know about touchdowns and field goals (thats just like rugby) but 1st downs 2nd play ???? what is all that about etc and the yellow line??

if you can point me to the direction of a site that can explain the rules in laymans terms i would be greatful.

oh and why in all american sports do they have stats for everything the player has ever done in his life etc. some are interesting but  dont understand when they go, donald trump .600 average with an increase of 3.54321 to the left

Well this guide seems very simple, but it could be a good starting point for learning the basics of NFL style football.

http://www.play-football.net/en/rules/beginnersguide.php

I can't explain the obsession with player stats though, for me the only stats that matter are Wins and Losses.

The stats are always useful for "comparison" purposes and arguments/disagreements between fans.  For instance, look up the stats for a football player named Art Monk.  Then look up the stats for another player named Michael Irvin.

Irvin is a friggen tool of a human being.  Monk was a quiet professional.  Irvin dresses like a pimp.  Monk faded into retirement.  Irvin is bombastic, prideful, and often lacking common sense in arguments.  Monk would have to be drugged to say something bad about another player.

After looking at their stats and comparing what these two professionals (and I use the term loosely with Irvin) have done for a career, take a guess who's going to go into the Hall Of Fame.

Now, Michael Irvin SHOULD be in the Hall Of Fame, but to have him in there when Art Monk epitomizes what the word "professional" means is a damned crime.  Speaking of crime, will Irvin give his acceptance speech in prison stripes?

When the 6th seed beats the 1, 2, and 3 seeds to get there, I'm totally OK with it.

had they not taken out our quarterback, they'd've never met the 1 or 2 seeds!  there's a reason kitna's the #2 qb.

just when cincy had something to hope for.  i almost feel another "dark age" coming because of that.  it seems like the perfect catalyst for this hard luck city.  i certainly hope not.

heck...it's easy to be a steeler fan when your team is performing good nearly every year.  the true fans emerge when a drought occurs.

anyways, go seahawks.  hines ward is just...i don't like the guy.  and i hate seeing bettis get into the end zone on a one yard run when that was the only play on the drive he was in, half the time untouched, screaming his brains out like he's the greatest.  and for god's sake...HE FUMBLED THE BALL ON THE EASIEST PLAY IN THE INDY GAME!  his ONLY objective was take care of the football, and he didn't do it!  don't get me wrong though, i don't dislike bettis...i just dislike bettis the player.  but i don't like ward at all.

if they win, i'm only happy for ben.  ben's an awesome guy.  not because he's so young at this time of his career, but just because he's highly respectable.

and steeler fans can be so obnoxious! :)

so when is arizona gonna wake up and have a football team?

Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know will we? And Kitna seemed to be playing fine against the Steelers, at least for the first half. Twice in that game Cincy had 10 point leads, and couldn't hold onto them. We survived some horrible calls, and some horrible mistakes against Indy, and pretty much destroyed the Broncos. The Steelers earned their spot.

Too much talent in Cincy, and too good of a coach for it all to fall apart that quickly. They'll be back, and at least they don't nauseate me the way the Ravens used to.

Quote

Yup. True enough, but I did suffer through the likes of Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, Bubby Brister, as well as the soap opera that was Kordell Stewart. I'd like to think I'm a true Steeler Fan. All winning teams get the bandwagon effect, that's part of the nature of sports.

Well to each their own, I'm a fan of both Bettis, and Ward. Classy guys in my opinion, and the irony of the Bettis fumble was that it was his only one the entire season. Kudos to the Indy player that hit the ball square with his helmet.

And a team with no obnoxious fans would be...? If I recall correctly Sam Wyche had to once use the PA system in Cincy to tell the fans to behave themselves. "You live in Cincinatti, not Cleveland!" I belive was the phrase he used.

Maybe when they move the fanchise to LA? Then again, probably never under any circumstances.

Ouch.  I can't think of a better rebuttal than Zero_hour's, except that I'd like to add Neil O'donell to his list.  We've seen good times and bad times, but the only way to get a seat in the stadium is spending many years on the waiting list for season tickets.  My family has probably only missed a small handful of televised games for as long as I can remember (including the Bubby days).

Visit the 'burgh during a bad football year and see if you can count all the Steeler hats, jackets, banners, etc you see in every neighborhood.

Sorry about your quarterback.  I hate to see the good ones get injured.

I just talked to my son's first grade teacher last night.  Seems she had Lofa Tatupu when he was in first grade.   ;D

Boring game, but the right team won.  What was up with Seattle's poor time management?

Or the fact that Seattle got screwed on a few HUGE calls that should have been a no-call.  The push-off in the first half to waive a touch-down, Roethlisbergers touchdown where he didn't actually cross the goal line, and the "holding" call that took the Seahawks from being 1st and goal on the one to being out of scoring range and then throwing the interception.

The STeelers may very well have scored on that 4th down, but the other two were weak calls, even noted by the commentators, huge game changing calls.

Seems that 80% of the officials were Steelers fans too......

The game was there to be won for Seattle in the fourth quarter and they did not win it.   That's all that matters.

Yep, I am the only that thinks Seattle got hosed....  they did need to step up, but they got NO help from the refs.  A couple other opinions:

I'm not bitter though, just filled with rage and hatred....   ;)

Oh, the Seahawks definitely got the short end of the reffing, but that generally is only an issue in a single game.  Reffing always balances out... some games you get crapped on, other games you get the gifts.  In this game Pittsburgh got the gifts, just like they got the crap in the last game.

Yep. The Steelers left this one hanging and Seattle didn't grab it.

The pass interference was close, but Jackson used is arm to 1) give himself some leverage to make a cut back to the ball and 2) push the defender away from the ball.   I slowmo it didn't look bad.  But it was right in front of the ref and he definitely looked like he pushed off at full speed.  I can't fault the ref for that one.

The holding on the Stephens completion to the 1 was holding all the way.  The tackle was to the outside of the linebacker with his left arm wrapped around the arm and neck of the linebacker.  He grabbed the jersey and pulled the linebacker off of his feet.  If that's not holding, I've never seen it.  I couldn't beleive that Madden was complaining about the call.  That was the definition of a holding call.

Both tough calls to make in the situation that they were made, but both were correct in my opinion.

The Roethlisberger TD was another tough call, but the ball doesn't have to cross the line, just touch it.  IF the ref on the field had not signaled TD, the Steelers would have challenged and the call would not have been overturned for them either.  It was too close to overrule that call either way.   I'm glad that I didn't have to make it.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Roethlisbergers touchdown where he didn't actually cross the goal line
That was too close to tell.  Camera's too far away.  Any part of the ball just has to cross any part of the white line.  Who says a dimple didn't cross a white blade of grass with how close it got.

The STeelers may very well have scored on that 4th down, but the other two were weak calls, even noted by the commentators, huge game changing calls.

You mean by Madden.  Hahahahahahaha, you trust him!

There were a couple of blown calls in the seahawks favor too, like that fumble which was ruled an incomplete pass.  But everyone kinda overlooked that.

Anyway, can't blame it all on the refs.  Seattle made some bonehead time management mistakes.

The 'fumble' was def. not a botched call/whatever.  As he was going down, he was touched by someone on the opposing team.  That's a down, anyway you look at it...saying that he wasn't down is just flat out ignoring the grab on his jersey.

well, i'll give pittsburgh their well deserved recognition.  while i'm anti-steeler, I'm also proudly objective.

That ball touched the line.  By only an inch though.  I rule a touchdown.  Thank goodness they didn't let Bettis put that in.  They stuffed him TWICE!  If he'd put that thing in, they'd've probably given him MVP for sentimental reasons.

IF the ref on the field had not signaled TD, the Steelers would have challenged and the call would not have been overturned for them either.

Agreed.

There were a couple of blown calls in the seahawks favor too, like that fumble which was ruled an incomplete pass.

He had not made a "football move" quite yet.  Yes, he got both feet down, but with the addition of that rule, it didn't qualify yet as a completed catch.  The correct call was made.

The 'fumble' was def. not a botched call/whatever.  As he was going down, he was touched by someone on the opposing team.

He was referring to a player on the right side of the field, who caught the ball, had two feet down (turning at the same time to run upfield) only to get hit and lose the ball a few moments after the second foot contacted the ground.  Incomplete pass, good call.  The refs made the correct call on that Hasselback play too.  Down by contact.

The push-off in the first half to waive a touch-down

Doesn't matter.  The minute any player stretches an arm out and makes pretty much ANY sort of contact with an opposing player, automatic interference.  And while I don't think he used it to push the defender away, I do believe he used it as a method to change direction faster, which doesn't matter, cause as I said:  arm outstretched against another player=interference.

The holding on the Stephens completion to the 1 was holding all the way.

That holding play.  I don't have a exact video of it stored in my brain nor can I find a video of it online, but I remember it fairly well.  I think that could've gone either way.  As soon as I saw the pass thrown, I saw a Steeler go down on the right side of the screen, and had a bad feeling about the play.  I thought Seattle had played it clean, but a few seconds later, learned that wasn't the case.
All linemen hold the jerseys.  That doesn't constitute holding.  It's where and what they do afterwards that determines if there's holding or not.  I don't think he pulled him off his feet.  I remember him as pushing up, trying to keep the guy back.  The fact that it WAS to the outside of the jersey is probably why they called holding, though I personally don't think it should've been called.  (I could alter my thoughts on that if I saw a replay of it though.  I'm just going by what I remember.)

Seattle made some bonehead time management mistakes.

40 seconds on the end of that play...whittled all the way down to 13 when the STEELERS called time out.  How much more time would've come off had they not called time?  1 time out left.  One word:  Idiocy.

from the ESPN site:  Worse, Hasselbeck was wrongly flagged for a below-the-waist block when he was trying to make the tackle.

The refs COMPLETELY blew that.  What the hell were they thinking on that one.  Did they not realize he made the tackle????

also from ESPN:  The play he made that salvaged a first-half lead for the Steelers -- the scramble left and deep heave from barely behind the line of scrimmage -- should have been batted down or even intercepted by your safety Michael Boulware. Instead, Boulware made a poor play on the ball and Ward caught it.

How many people would've believed that ball would've been caught, for as long as it was in the air, in the fairly short distance it was thrown (as opposed to a true hail mary????)  Boulware should hang his head in shame.  That ball was easier to hit than a T-ball.

You mean by Madden.  Hahahahahahaha, you trust him!

Does anyone like the I-have-to-explain-everything-a-million-times-because-viewers-are-idiots announcer?  I hate Madden.  I wish he would retire.  I can't stand listening to him say the same thing over and over again, or repeat what the other announcer just said with different verbiage.  Madden's a moron.

except that I'd like to add Neil O'donell

I think Cincy had them too for a brief period!

Seattle had plenty of shots to take control of the game, even when the refs didn't interfere with them.  They can't solely blame the refs for their loss.  They had (many) hands in it as well.
