monitor has the "jitters"
« on: December 13, 2005, 08:57:41 pm »
My WG  K7401 is jittery... I have put a new capkit in it to get rid of my pincushion problem, and this is on the next thing to fix.  It gets rather annoying having your screen shake while playing games...I have a link below that is a video clip of it shaking. Download is only 512kb. Please download the video clip and give me some possible solutions...

thanks,

-Kyle Wade

trying checking the v-size and v-hold trim pots first, then video cables. Most of the time when the monitor jitters it's usually U701 (LA7850).

I dont have my vid (vga breakout)cable hooked up (to make sure it wasnt it..). What you saw was nothing connected to the input of the monitor...I just adjusted the picture so i would have a nice blue picture. So the monitor jitters by itself without incoming video. As far as the pots go, im not really sure how to check them. How do you check to see if there alright? Better yet how would you replace/get parts?

most monitors jitter when there is no input to the monitor, plug something in and check if that is actually the problem.

This has been sitting up here a while, and still no responses. Just wanted to bring it back up...So the i guess the question is, can bad vhold/vpos/hpos pots cause this type of effect on a monitor, or do you think it is something else?

Have you tried plugging in a regular video game in besides the computer? Not all graphics cards work well with WG's monitors.

See thats just it, it was working fine, but then it suddenly "Craped" out on me. However i did notice the screen to start jittering for a while before she totally gave up on me.  So i know its not my graphic card (my Arcade VGA card)..Im wondering since the monitor had some jiggle to it before it started doing this, if the same thing is to blame..But i know its not my videocard to monitor setup because i have played for at least 4months on it with absolute no problem. To answer your quistion i do not have an arcade game to plug it up too.  Please respond,

-Kyle

ps: where can i get those pots that are on the adjustment board? And also again, can these effects be caused by bad pots? i have double checked my cableing, and my cap kit is super new. Thanks for all of the help in advance.

you can buy trim pots at www.mouser.com. Sometimes they can cause this problem, like the v-hold/h-hold but I think it would be helpful if you inspected your chassis again because this problem could be something that you might have overlooked.

"Jitter" is defined as both vertical jumpiness and horizontal 'weave' occuring. Is that the case here or are you only experiencing vertical jumping?

If vertical jumping only then generally you only have one of two problems: bad solder joints on the main monitor board and/or the remote adjustments board (get out a good light and a high powered magnifier) or "scratchy" trimpots (usually it's the vertical hold or vertical height/size trimpot.

In the hard copy catalog, look under the heading of "Single turn trimmer potentiometers".

You want something like the Tyco/Citec trimmers that Mouser has as their # 323-409H-10k as an example.

Bob Roberts sells these replacement trimpots.

What is the bob robert's site where I can order?  Would it be cheaper to get the parts from their or from mouser?

Bob sells either individual trimpots @ $3.00 each or a full set for a remote board for something like $12 I think.

Personally, I buy the trimpots from Mouser since I get them for about 40 cents each.

Whats the link to the Bob Roberts site so i can purchase the pots? i know they would be cheaper in mouser, but i think it would be easier to order from BR.

I emailed bob roberts and got this reply:

"If they are standard spacing I have them all, but the 200K which WG went to 500K on other bds, so I only stock the 500K & I don't know if it would be suitable on your particular bd."

So I guess my question is, is my board standard spacing?

I recieved my bob roberts board kit, and changed all the pots on the adjustment board. The Height and v hold both were changed from 200k to 500k pots.  It seemed my monitor didnt like that to much and started doing some weird stuff like discoloring an folding up on the bottom. So i put my old 200k in and im pretty much back where i started.  It seems that my v-hold is acting like a vertical height calibration. i thought when you use vhold it was only suppose to control the vertical scrolling, not adjust the screen size.. I dont know what i need to do, this is really starting to suck though, i have been screwing with this monitor for over a year... Should i try and find 200k pots to replace the old ones (since the 500k didnt do the trick)? Please give me any suggestions.

I have not worked on nor encountered a 7400 series monitor.

A suggestion:
Seems like each time you work on it, things get worse. Since you have damaged the foil traces
and donuts from bad soldering skills, I'd say it's time to ship the monitor main board, neckboard, and
remote adjustment board to the service department at Wells-Gardner and cut your losses. At least you'd
receive a working, tested set of monitor boards back (plus a warranty!) and your monitor would be up
and running again.
