Gateway Dimension monitor vs. TV with S-Video
« on: January 13, 2006, 10:44:38 am »
I am building a cab but the wallet will not allow for an arcade monitor nor a large computer monitor (in descending order of preference).  Consequently, I have been leaning towards a 27-inch television with S-video (I would prefer component for a sharper image but the Act Lightguns are incompatible with component output).

Recently, however, I was given the opportunity to purchase a Gateway Dimension monitor at a reasonable price.  Given that this monitor was (allegedly) able to be used as a computer monitor, would I have a better image if I used the Gateway Dimension vs. the television?  I would appreciate any advice.

I apologize for the shameless bump, but I would appreciate hearing anyone's opinion.

The size of the TV would definitely be better than the PC monitor which I'm assuming would not be 27 inch.

If it is, then it would be easier to hook up definitely, but it wouldn't have the genuine look.

That's just me though, it's either arcade monitor or nothing.  :)
Now in a tasty new flavour.

I would consider a 19" arcade monitor + bezel over a 27" monitor myself.   Its 200 bucks shipped to your door for a new one on ebay kinda often.  Then 89 or whatever for an arcadevga... your good to go.

Heck a 19" and a rotatable monitor might be a good solution for both vertical and horizontal.  That wont cost that much more (but take a LOT more time to build and design)

Something else to consider.

2 or 4 player CP?  If 4, I would suggest the TV.  I have a 27" tv and find thats is more than acceptable for my tastes.  You get more bang for your buck, albeit at a quality hit.

If you have a video card with S-video out and a TV of a close size that you can try it out on, I would say do that and see how the image looks.  That may help you make a choice.

The Gateway Dimension size is 27 inches (I forgot to put that in my original post).  So it really is a question between a TV with s-video and the Dimension monitor.  I just wonder which of the two offers the better video quality.

HooPZ:  I plan on making a 4 player CP.

I'd go with the 27 inch computer monitor.  Not often you get a shot at one of those at an affordable price.  It should be clearer then a TV with S-Video (some are really bad and some are very good).  It may not give you the true arcade picture but it sure is easy to setup.

Just my personal opinion.

Ditto.  Since they are both the same size, the pc monitor will/should have a much better picture.

And the hookup will be much easier.

Connecting my arcade monitor to the PC was a pain the ass but well worth it.

Hi, my name is Kagemusha, and I am an idiot.

I have been consistently talking about a "Gateway Dimension" monitor throughout this whole thread when the monitor I have been looking at is actually a "Gateway Destination" monitor/TV.  I don't know if that changes anyone's advice, but I thought I should correct my mistake.  Thanks again for all the advice.
