Even Tiny-er
« on: April 24, 2006, 12:11:02 pm »
Was given one of these as a gift.

My intent is to make a scale arcade cabinet with a little joystick, a little button, a little coin door (for dimes), etc.

I'm thinking it might be too small to fit anything inside CPU-wise, so it may just be a controller with USB, power, and video sticking out the back.

I'm thinking a scale-perfect galaga, galaxian, gorf, or DK.   Tron would be sweet, but I don't want to make tiny trigger sticks and spinners form scratch.

Maybe the mini-est tube cocktail cab ever...

I would stick with something with real basic controls ie: 1 4-way and a button. And while those are great games and all I'd try doing something a llittle different like an "Eyes" or a "Kid Niki" or something.... :)

Holy crap man just use one of those Jakks arcade crappy things. That should fit just fine, I believe galaga comes in one of those, and you don't even have to mess with anything PC wise.

Ah, good idea. I was thinking (daydreaming) if it was a small B&W set, it would
be cool to have a mini-arcade for the classic raster games like Space invaders, Asteroids, etc.

I've actually done that before, I was looking for it to be a bit more versatile.

Ah, I see. Well, you could always buy a PSP with the Video Out adapter thing, and just stick mame in there. The video out thing comes with a controller input to plug in a regular dual shock so you don't have to hack up the PSP controls. Plus, its just a good excuse to get a PSP :D I Think that would be small enough and give you the versatility you need to some extent. Altough it might be a tad expensive :D

You could use a mini-itx motherboard like this one:

These little guys are tiny!  (6.7" x 6.7") and would make a perfect bartop project.

Attach it to a Mac Mini. ;)

Doing a little math, if the I do a 1/4 scale Galaga/Ms.Pac (with a little width fudging) I should have a 6"x77/8"x ~3" space under the tube to put a computer.  The whole cab will be about 1613/16" tall.  So my Mac-mini might fit.  Technically the full size ones had 19" monitors so if I did it to faithful 6:19 scale, I'd have plenty of room in there for a mini-itx.

I may have to make the joystick from scratch or live with it being out of scale.
