Wells Gardner Vs. Betson
« on: March 16, 2005, 04:04:56 pm »
I thought some of you might find this correspondence with Kevin at retro blast interesting:

Dave,

Feel free to post it. I'm actually working on a web page for my site which will list my current equipment recommendations, but it's not done yet.

The Wells-Gardner supposedly has "unofficial" support for 800x600 - I know the tube's dot-pitch is the same as the Betson, meaning they're both capable of displaying the same resolutions, and from what I've heard the WG's circuitry is now more capable of handling a 38Khz video signal (800x600x60Hz).

That said, the Betson at least supports 800x600 officially, but I wouldn't count on using 800x600 as the default resolution on either monitor. That resolution on both monitors is only okay, with a noticably fuzzy picture especially compared to 640x480. I run my Betson at 640x480 by default.

I appreciate the feedback.  I looked at the Wells web site and they currently are selling them for $470.  However, I didn

Some of you considering the WG d9200 monitor may find the following information useful.  Below is a quote from an email I received from Wells Gardner:

"... TO ANSWER YOU ABOUT THE D9200 MONITOR. ONLY CERTAIN MODELS CAN HANDLE THE 800X600 RES. THOSE MODELS ARE THE WGM2792- S19C OR THE 53D OR THE 08E OR THE53E."

 :o

... so much for "unofficial" support.  This sounds fairly "official" to me.  I called and spoke to the guy who sent me the information for more clarification, because I saw this on the website when I searched for the above part number(WGM2792- S19C):

"This monitor is setup to run in frequencies
31 khz and 38 khz.
This monitor can be adjusted manually to run in
15khz and 25 khz also."

so I asked him if this monitor could still handle the 15kHz and 25kHz modes, and he said "oh yeah, no problem".

so I am pretty excited.  This model is $25 more than the original d9200s.

I still recommend the mod to the 9200 that I did to mine.

Take a couple of pc fans and strap them to the frame one blowing across the neck board and one drawing the hot air away.

Those neck board need alot of cooling.

p.s. I still love my 9200 and it does 800x600 just fine.

(A little blurry, but fine..)
