Defender Settings?
« on: November 19, 2005, 08:07:57 pm »
Hey guys-
Im trying to get Defender to work properly, but can't seem to get the settings to work so that I can reverse directions properly, etc.  Can someone tell me how to set this up so it works perfectly?

I did search the forum, but didn't seem to find it.
Thanks!

What version of MAME?
Old versions let you reverse and thrust with the joystick. I read this has been removed from some of the newer builds, though haven't verified this personally.

I am using Analog+ on XP.  I am about to upgrade that to the latest version if I can.  Suggestions on how to make defender work properly?
Thanks

Well, the only directions I have are up/down on the joystick. Maybe that's how it used to be, I just don't remember.  I have 6 buttons. Button 1 is fire. 2 is thrust. 3 is smart bomb, and five is reverse directions.  Should you be able to reverse directions with the joystick?  I honestly don't remember how it was back then.  Is there an easier way to setup the buttons/controls to work easier?
Thanks

The original defender had an up/down joystick and a button right next to the joystick to change directions. So... fire, thrust, smart bomb, hyperspace, reverse are the buttons, up/down on the joystick. Last time I checked, Mame has a built in "cheat" that allows you to use the joystick to change directions, rather than using the "reverse" button. If the cheat is still there, "tab" into the configure menu to enable the cheat, it will probably be in the user controls setup for defender or in the dipswitch menu. Probably the player 1 controls for defender. If you don't see it in that menu... you might need to configure another button.

I never knew about this, but I can't find any options through the menus in my .88 version.  I've Googled and found references to this 'cheat', but no specific instructions.  Anybody wanna help a brother out?

I believe you have to have cheat.dat and cheats enabled.

Gotcha.  I was thinking it was just some setting.  I'll check that out. Thanks.
