Gamecube is down to $80...

Ya know, the Gamecube is a disappointment in many ways, but for the Zelda games (including the upcoming and phenominal looking Twilight Princess), Metroid, Smash Bros, Eternal Darkness, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario and Resident Evil 5 (if you don't already have PS2) alone $80 is a steal.  And for anyone who doesn't have any of the new systems this will give you access to most of the multiconsole titles like Splinter Cells and Prince of Persias.  And they usually run a bit better on the Gamecube than the PS2 cos it's more powerful.

And, I gotta admit....

The most fun a bunch of us had playing a console recently was playing all the mini-games from Mario Party 4 and 5.

I'd add Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion to the list of Nintendo titles that make the Cube worth buying.

Forgot this:

A bunch of us finally linked our two Cubes together for 8-way Mario Kart.  Got a couple of LCD projectors, S-video cables and man....it was hysterical.

Something like the picture below, but this was one I found from another group:

I agree with spiffyshoes, what has been so disappointing about a well built system with a selection of games appealing to a wide audience and consistently under the price point of other consoles, now to the point of almost 'how is that possible' cheap?

Edit: Oh yeah... I'd buy another one at this price if it still had the digital jack for 480p output, but I'm just going to wait since the Revolution will be backwards compatible with the Gamecube.

True, so was Chaos Field.  But I don't think either of them had a US version released on the DC.  They were strictly import titles.  On that same note Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid were on the Playstation First but I think their GameCube Remakes were improved enough to make them worth getting.

Where the heck did you get that list spiffyshoes? That's a good list to keep around when people start bagging on the GCN. Personally, I'm a big Nintendo fan (<---Gamecube & DS avatar sprited by myself).

what has been so disappointing...?

Well, it's legitimately disappointing that so many of the great games involve goofy voices and members of the mushroom kingdom.  It's disappointing that, while that is a nice list of games, it is nowhere near the size of the PS2 list of exclusives.  It's disappointing that important genres, like RPGs are practically non-existent.  It's disappointing that the marketing was quite bad and that relatively few systems were sold in America, so chances are you don't have any friends with a Gamecube.

Don't get me wrong, I started this thread.  Of the next gen systems the Revolution is the ONLY one I plan to buy at launch (well, I'm thinking I might get a PS3 just to sell on Ebay).  I'm a huge Nintendo fan.  But being a fan doesn't mean you shouldn't be disappointed when your team loses a game.  Lets hope they do better next season.

p.s.  Soapboy, you haven't played RE 4.  Eternal Darkness was a really good game.  It barely even compares with RE 4.  Go get it.  Don't be fooled by the previous RE games.  It is completely reinvented and it is the best game on any system in years.

You want Mario to be holding a 9mm gangsta style like Shadow the Hedgehog?

I hardly call any company still pulling down a hefty profit and being highly entertaining to a broad age group while retaining only a small percentage of the market share the losing team.

It sounds to me... you've grown up in the gaming world and disappointed that Nintendo hasn't grown with you. Why do you want something to change that clearly is trying to market towards a specific crowd and has a different focus. If you really are having a hard time finding things you like on this system and you're looking for the next console from Nintendo to be any different, I'd seriously consider another choice as your main one.

You know by some of my posts how much of a loyal Nintendo fan I am, yet I don't want them to try and imitate Sony or Microsoft to gain any marketshare. They'd lose themselves in the process and what makes up the core of Nintendo. If they changed at all I might as well just go buy a mass market megasales - do all console like the others are portraying themselves out to be.

Nintendo and I have shook hands and been friends ever since I held that first NES controller. I haven't grown up and changed on my friend and neither have they on me. If that makes me a loyalist or immature person, so be it.

It's a disappointment because it doesn't have the 9 billion games the PS2 does. If my wife didn't play RPG's exclusively, I'd have a Gamecube instead. It'll still be my next console purchase as it is.

Yeah, the PS2 is probably my favorite of the big 3 consoles this generation.

Super Monkey Ball is out on PS2 and Xbox so it isn't really an exclusive.  Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2 has a Playstation 2 version, and Phantasy Star Online is out on Xbox.  Also Sonic Mega Collection is out on all 3 systems so again not an exclusive.  I purposly left out the Donkey Konga games because I wasn't sure if they would be something that most people would find appealing or not.  There were a few other games I left out too for example all of the Pokemon Games.  I did miss FZero GX though.  That is definently a great GameCube game.  Thanks for pointing it out.

As for shared titles there are a ton more shared titles that are good than the ones you listed.  And you are right GameCube is king of the party scene.  Crystal Chronicals all of those Mario Party Games, Super Smash, Zelda: Four Swords, etc;

I really wish there was more rpg's on the cube. The cube with a wavebird controller is great. the thing that bothers me with all the systems is there is some really good rpg's released only in Japan.

Gamecube is one of the most underrated game consoles of all time.

RE 4 is sheer brilliance, and it plays best on the cube.

The new Zelda game will cause my glands to milk, it's going to be so good.
