Mame input
« on: January 24, 2003, 10:37:05 pm »
Sorry for the newbie question, but when I hit tab during a game and go to general input, and I map certain functions (like coin, or whatever) to a certain button on my joystick, how do I save this setup?

Every time I do this, it works fine as long as I'm in the game, but when I leave the game, I have to re-enter this information. Thanks for your help!

(I'm using Mame32 for Windows 98, by the way)

Regards,
Mario

Mario,

One of your config files is read only. After I get all the stuff copied over from the CD's I select the whole Mame directory, select properties and clear the read only checkbox. That should do it.

Actually just the files in the cfg directory should do it.

I selected everything in my Mame folder, and unchecked it so that it's not Read-Only. But it still won't save my settings.

Am I doing it right? ???
I hit tab, then I go to the particular input, hit enter, hit the button on my joystick
Then I do this for the other buttons too.
Then I hit tab to return to the game.
Then I play the game, and it has my settings. But as soon as I hit escape and go to Mame, then back into any game, the settings are lost.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help

Try checking JUST the default.cfg file in the cfg directory. I have had some trouble trying to select more than 1 file or directory and changing it. Maybe it didn't change that file. Other than that, you are doing it correctly. If it still doesn't work, just delete the default.cfg file altogether. Good luck.

J_K_M_A_N is right. WinXP allows you to change the attrivbutes of all of the files within a folder. It appears Win98 isn't as intuitive.

BTW, just a note, if you use lazarus right now, you might want to think about using ctrlr files to define your controls, especially if you want to use the outcome of the controls.dat project.

Actually if you use any fe that is willing to add support to the controls.dat viewer then it's probably a good idea.  Something that's further down the line, but I figured... Hey, if I'm going to have to write a program to read the ctrlr.ini files then I might as well add support to writing them as well.  In other words, picture a graphical representation of your controls and a graphical representation of the original arcade cp and a point and click interface to redefine them.  Again, I'm jumping the gun here as this is WAAAY into the future, but it's just something to think about.
