The original series (obviously) had allusions to religions (the 12 tribes etc etc etc) but never took it beyond that.
Well, apart from the fact that they met THE DEVIL!  ;D

But the "Bible Virus" is not as interesting a proposition as the "Random Virus" they had in Space: Above & Beyond. :)

BSG has made a really good start at seeding clues, subtleties like most likely the war started because some twit accidentily or deliberately added the bible to their latest BIOS update.

Whoa whoa whoa!  Wait one minute!  How did I miss that?!?!?!   When was that little tidbit mentioned?  Do you know what episode?

Touche!  I forgot all about the episodes where they turned into angels as well (or whatever the deal was when their uniforms turned white)   You are correct, they did occasionally toss in the relgious thing, but obviously not to the extent that they are in the new series where it's part of the overriding plot that drives the whole series.

The original show was based on Mormanisim.

Wow, I did not know that.  I'll have to do some Googling, but based on what I know about some of the Mormons' 'secret' beliefs, I can see the connection.

I'm learning all kinds of things about BSG I didn't know.
Thanks

Well, if anybody is an 'unbeliever' about the religion/BSG connection, just Google.  I found more info and discussion about it than I expected.   I guess I'm not the only one who picked up on it while watching the new series :)

There's an interesting article/interview here about the Cylon's religion.   The article, unfortunately, makes me think jbox might be correct when he said:

I know the cylons have a plan. I remain unconvinced that the writer really has one though.

I was a big fan of the X-Files at one point, but then really felt like they were just making it up as the went along and it totally ruined it for me.  I felt like I had been tricked into believing that the writers/creator knew what they were doing when, in reality, they didn't.

I hope I don't grow to dislike the new BSG in the same way.

Best. Show. Ever. (one of at any rate).

True, for me at least.

Google Video has a couple of great clips related to the show.

http://video.google.com

Search for "Battlestar Galactica"

Check out the "Season 2 trailer" and the "Battlestar Galactica trailer" in particular.

The show should have won "Best Drama" hands down.  First rate acting, soundtrack, and effects all make this an outstanding series.

There was a scene in the series premier miniseries where the camera shows a planet and finds a little speck in orbit and zooms in to show the Galactica...the massive battlestar that holds the last hope of mankind in the universe.  That 5 seconds was one of the best movie images I've ever seen.  Period.

After reading that interview I am not so sure anymore. Previously though, that was the only thing that made sense to me because they are ROBOTS. How do you teach something to a piece of software? Either you can show how to derive it, or you have to issue an override to add it as a new axiom into the system.

Gyus = roman emperor. Roman emperor = birth of catholic church. Why are the cylon's rebuilding the twelve colonies? Why are they letting the humans continue to survive? What level of self-loathing must you get by believing only the angry monkeys get to go to heaven, and they aren't even grateful about it? Helping get your 'prophets' into place by blowing up your own bases? I am really hooked on this show, but the jigsaw is still a bunch of seperate chunks, we need some pieces to tie the edges together still before I agree it tops B5 and S:A&B.

Not saying of course it isn't excellent. CGI, actors, drama are all top notch and award-winning. But they could still blow it all by making the third Matrix movie as it were. :)

I don't see that happening. This series has been top-notch since the very beginning. I was hooked about a half hour into the miniseries. IMO, it's been getting better with each passing episode.

I believe that the Cylons have a plan, and so do the writers. The story has been too tight for them to have been making it up as they go.
