Question for you experts.

I found that there is a seller out of Toronto that auctions aroung the second day of every month.  His cabs go for 300-500 CAN$. 

I had decided to build a custom cab with new controls.  I spent 250 on buttons and joys, and 120 on keyboard and optical encoders.  I still will have to spend about 100 on plywood and then some for t-moulding and paint.

As you can see, it would have been cheaper to spend, say, 275 on a cab, and then clean it up and replace any buttons or joys etc that need it, paint it, and be done.

Personally I wouldn't count on fixing up and selling for a profit.  Chances are that you'll invest more in repairs/restoration, than you can make back.

I'd say, restore if that's your thing and you want an all orignal cab.  Mame an existing cab if you want the cheapest mame option.  Build custom if nothing less than your perfec, ideal machine will do.

Eccs, it depends on whether or not the game is an original dedicated Mr Do, or if it's some other cabinet that has been converted to Mr Do. (You can tell an original by the fancy light-effects thingy installed in the back, above the monitor (visible to the player when playing).

Also depends on condition. Your question is llike asking "is a 1990 Buick Skylark worth $1000?" Who knows. Is the car smashed up or in pristine condition? etc....

I will make a point of looking for that "thingy".  I can't say as I ever remember seeing that when playing the game way back when, but who knows.

As for your comment on the Skylark, that's actually funny, as I owned a 1991 up to about a year ago.  I sold it for $800.

Agree with the convert an existing cab to MAME, but would recommend picking a generic cab and, if you are in SW Ontario, grabbing it at one the Starburst auctions. Generic fighter cabs go for far less than $300-500 (and if the seller Mark70 refers to is who I think it is, that is where he buys them).

There are examples here of both conversions and original dedicated. The bottom one where you see a "color wheel" above the monitor glass is an original.

If original, I would restore it. And as for price, that depends on condition.

Thanks for the info.  Perhaps you can clear something up for me.  Any of the ones I remember playing in the arcade usually resembled the  1st or second one.  I don't think I've ever seen the 3rd one before.  Is a conversion what I think it is?  A machine that was once another game, and changed over? It seems strange that back when this game was new in the arcades that they would have been conversions. (unless my understanding is incorrect)

not to smach any dreams or hopes, but most of the time, arcade renovations don't make profit.  period.  there are times when someone discovers a tron in an old building and gets it for free and can turn and sell it for some profit, but that never seems to happen to real people.  if your going to do an arcade renovation, it's because you enjoy it and you enjoy the game.  it's a love of hobby, not a love of income.  also, the recent arcade boom is kinda over.
