Things are all coming together nicely(new pics)
« on: October 30, 2005, 01:54:19 am »
Finally starting my first cab. It was to start out as Mortal Kombat copy but I changed my mind a little. It is now two piece cab kinda like a mix between Mk and UAII. Don't have any pics yet. Apparently lost my digital camera the last time I moved.

As for the the theme not sure yet. Though the name I am leaning towards is The Fifth Element. Since it is one of my favorite movies.

Good luck kdog, have a good read on here and ask plenty of questions! I screwed up on my first cab ::) expensive way to learn when all the info is on here.
A few tips (unless you've already got skills in this area):

- Use MDF for all panels.
- If the store you buy your wood from offers a cutting service on one of those huge saw beds and the guy can cut accurately get them to do the straight edges! 50p a cut where I got mine and done in 5 mins!
- If you're painting it at home prime your panels with multi surface primer or MDF primer to seal the MDF and apply all paint with a sponge roller. Unless you have a better way of finishing such as laminate or a car bodyshop who could spray finish it.
- When using a jigsaw to cut the curves I used very narrow blades that cut finely, Work slowly so that the blade doesn't tilt to the side or your t-molding edge wont be at 90 degs.
-Measure twice cut once as they say! A couple of times I marked a panel and then noticed I'd measured incorrectly.
Hope some of this helps and if anyone more experienced has different views on what I've posted please put me right! Have fun. It's a well worthwile project.

Doh! Just realised you already did the cab build! Just no camera. Oh well someone else might read it!

Looks great, looks like you'll have the monitor leaning far back, that will be great for Golden Tee. I also love Fifth Element! ;D

Thanks, I like the way midway cabs lean back the monitor. Though the bottom half look to bulky for my taste. I drew up a one piece with this shape. It just didn't look right so thats why I did the cab in two pieces lik the UAII

And yes I ment house I was in a hurry had to pick up the wife since I drove the escape today or really  I just suck at typing.

KDOG,

I like the two tone cab, Black and Blue.
Do you have any side art or ideas?

So far I have a couple issues.
1 DO NOT use a cordless saw at all for this type of project. It really sucks ass.
2 Make sure your working surface is on flat  ground. i.e. not large crack in the concrete of the garage and different heights on each side.

Very fine job.
The monitor\tv angle looks very steep. what kind of display device are you
intending for the cab?

Great colors. gotta break the boring black.
Good luck with your cab

I have problem.....
« Reply #18 on: January 28, 2006, 11:05:18 pm »
Where to start. I was measuring my cab to see if it would fit in my new apartment. I noticed that the slot that I cut for the t-molding looked a little big. So closer examination it is 1/8" thick. Thinking to my self I know I bought a 1/16" bit at Lowes but was apparently on the wrong peg.

So am I totally screwed or can I put some liquid nail down in the slot before i put the t-molding in?

I think it's best for you to use a glue gun. Still it's gonna be a headache  ::)

Ehh, I did that... many times, using hot glue is very hard and doesn't hold very well around tight curves (of which it looks like you have many).  I never tried liquid nail though, maybe this will turn out better? you'll have to let us know.

I had a few areas on my sides where I butchered the slot pretty badly.
I filled in the wide slots with wood putty then ran the slot cutting trough again.
Worked great.

The only thing about gluing the t-moulding is, that it could be a mess trying to cut shape and glue all at the same time.
What if it pops out while setting? Then you got a bigger mess.
Replacing down the road would suck also.

The t-moulding was new for me and when I was working on an inside curve my cuts were too far apart.
The curve then had all the 'dents' in it. I thouhgt it was from hitting with the mallet.
Two days later it was bugging me. I peeled the t-moulding off (no glue) and found thet my cuts were about 3/8" to 1/2" apart. I then made the cuts about 1/8" wide and the curve came out perfect.

Good luck!

the billabs BL27CB1T 27" curved monitor that does 15-38khz. I wanted the flat tube one but they didn't have them when I order it. They only had the one that goes up to xga in the flat tube in.
