xevious to jamma adapter
« on: October 15, 2005, 10:43:30 am »
I am building a xevious board to jamma adapter.  I have the original wiring harness from the board, cut about 1 foot along the wires.  I have a jamma fingerboard which i am going to solder the wires to.  Can anyone look at the pinout and tell me which wires i do not need.  There are a lot of 5volt lines, a 10.3 volt, etc that probobly dont need to be wired, but not sure which to omit.  thanks for the help

Uhhh.... why don't YOU look at the pinout??

 ???

Here it is: http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=pinout&page=Xevious.txt

well, i did look at the pinout, and i mapped most of the wires.  However, there are some wires that i believe might not be necessary to send to jamma, but i really do not know which might be unimportant, hoping someone else might know from experience what wires are not needed

Does Xevious use the AR-II board? Most Atari games use a power regulator and audio amp combined on one secondary board. I think that may be the only problems you will really have. The audio straight off the board might be unamplified.

Wires that will certainly not be used via JAMMA are the 2 player start button LED lights.

Yes, it does use the secondary board, i have the other board here also, but was hoping not to have to use it.  I was not really sure what it would do in a jamma setup.

I'm pretty new to this, and correct me if I am wrong, but if your board wants 10.3 VDC on one of its pins, you are going to have to give it that. You won't find this on a JAMMA harness of course, so wire that pin direct to 10.3 VDC on your Xevious power supply (or in whatever fashion it shows in the schematics). If you don't have an Xevious power supply, but rather a standard more modern switching supply like a typical JAMMA machine would have, then you are out of luck I would think. You can try wiring it all up without giving it the 10.3 VDC, but I have no idea what would happen.

Generally the Atari boards use the 10.3v to get the CPU going. It will be stuck in reset if you don't give it power here.

That being said, I've sucessfully used +12v from a switching PS in place of 10.3v on some Jamma adaptors (Cloak & Dagger, Food Fight)

I'm pretty sure you'll need an audio amp to get sound. You can use the A/R II or some other amp you substitute in.

When I make adaptors, I hook up the power and video only first. Once I get that going, I add in controls and sound.

Good luck,
Rocky

redfivexw, does this make you wish you had not hacked that classic?

Personally I don't believe in hacking up perfectly good working games from that era. If you really need a cab to play JAMMA boards in, just buy a cheap generic.

I can't speak for redfivexw, but it makes me wish that someone else had not hacked my Punch-Out machine before I got it. Wait, I wished that before I read this thread...

Now I have to make a JAMMA adapter plus extra direct wiring for the stuff not covered by JAMMA, and do something about those damnable extra holes in my control panel. I would also like to have a PCB shield cage to replace the one that currently counts itself among the missing.

I have about 10 arcade cabs in my basement now, including several classics.  I bought the Xevious because i thought the cabinet was cool, however the game bored me very quickly.  I put a galaga 88 board in it and now i am very happy with it, a cool board that had no cool cabinet in its day, and a cool cabinet.  And they are both spaceship themed so it works out well.  I just wanted to be able to put the xevious board back in, on occasion, if i felt the desire.  I did not know it would be that hard, but i still feel i made the right decision for me.  I am learning a lot from these board discussions, and i am learning a lot from working on these machines.  I  do not regret my decision one bit

Galaga 88 is a cool game. I have the board. Sometimes swap it into my Galaga (which is JAMMA). Kinda ironic huh? But the cab was already JAMMA when I got it, so I'm free from guilt!  ;D

And you're right. Xevious is pretty boring.

Yeah, i think Galaga 88 is the best of the galaga series, i have all 3 of them and like it the best.  The Xevious cabinet is really nice looking, lots going on with it.  I, unlike many one the boards, do not feel any guilt re-wiring the cabs.  I got a beautiful Super Pac Man off ebay a while back, it was in storage since 1990 when it broke, it was in great shape.   The cabinet is prisine. I gutted the wiring and power supply, installed a switcher and jamma harness, and put a 9in1 board in it (that contained super pacman plus others) and it is a wonderful piece.  It appears original in every way on the outside, but has nice modern components on the inside, and has 9 games to boot.  Whenever people come over, they immediately go to that game and stay there.  And by re-wiring, troubleshooting is so much easier as everything is simplified and new.  No, it may not be original, but it is way more fun, and to me, that is what matters.

PS - i see excellentcom.net has a 100 in 1 jamma board that contains xevious and galaga on 1 board (plus 98 others), maybe i'll get that board, wouldnt that be cool?
