Mamewah - possible to trade game lists?
« on: February 24, 2006, 12:16:04 pm »
I love spending my time messing with my cabinet and it's games; however there are many titles which I would have been better never bothering with.

I was windering if Mamewah is capable of taking a game list from someone else and plug it in.

I thought it would be cool for people to post game lists and info like, user prefers side scrolling brawlers, or user prefers overhead shooters, or puzzle games  etc..

I would think that as long as the lists came from the same version of Mamewah that there wouldn't be a problem.  Nice idea, btw...

MAMEWAHs game list format hasn't changed in years.  I don't see a problem organizing something like that other than not everyone has all the ROMs, which would render the list unusable.

*shrug* go for it.

In a similar vein, i have played EVERY game and filtered the truly worthwhile games down to 220 games or so.

Is there anyway to convert the filtered list to a text file?  I try to backup my .ini files from time to time, but my greatest fear is losing my filtered list somehow as it took probably 60 hours of playing to get the list i love.

It would also be nice just to have a clean list to share with others that use another frontend, or for comparison to another person's list.

Is there a way to do this other than manually writing it out?  The mamewah file is filled with all sorts of other information that doesnt look like a batch file could do it.

I wrote a Perl script which can take your Mamewah list and print it out as a text file, or as a tab-delimited file suitable for viewing with Excel. It can also take in a list of games and generate a filtered Mamewah list with only those games chosen. I did this as an easy way to generate custom lists. Example: generate an Excel file, then in Excel you mark those you want to include in your list, and then use this to generate the custom list. So, if you post your game list (using ROM names), I can read it in and generate a Mamewah file.

The script can also generate lists based on category choices (e.g., all trackball games), and it can use the catver.ini file to generate categoried lists.

If there's interested, I'll get it up onto a web site with some instructions.

There is interest.  Here at least.

I'd love to get things sorted into trackball, overhead shooters, side scrolling brawlers, etc.... and filter out the adult titles.

No joke.  Obviously there are groups of games and clones that go quickly, but i acutally fired up and checked out every game, except those you pass over anyway like majong, quiz crap, and unplayable games.

That is exactly why my filtered list has more value to me then my cab!  (Time is money) - it was probably just a little more than 60 hours of "work".    ;D

I posted my Perl script here.

If you run it with the -xh option, you will get some detailed help text (or just view the file and read the help text itself, which is at the end of the script).

PM me if you have any specific questions.

Thanks for that.

I'll mess around with it.  I'm no command line guy, or programmer for that matter, hopefully I can figure it out.

I've never been able to get more than the mamewah full game list and the "filtered" list working in mamewah.
