Vector from Scratch? Examples Inside!!
« on: September 13, 2005, 04:20:26 pm »
I am having someone create some custom artwork for me in photoshop - is there a setting when you start a new picture as a vector drawing right from the start or is there a whole process involved?

Photoshop does not do vector graphics.  He'd need to use Illustrator or another program, and it works entirely differently than designing in Photoshop.  If your guy is able to work in Illustrator instead of Photoshop, and thinks he can do the design you're looking for in vector, go for it.

Thanks.  Unfortunately, he only works in Photoshop.  He is actually a cartoonist and is drawing the graphic with colored ink and then transposing it to Photoshop and it sounds like a lot of work already.  Worst case scenario maybe I can persuade some of the talented people around here to vectorize it for me if it really needs to be resized.

That's alot of work to draw, scan then vectorize. If they are drawings, I'd say just make sure he draws LARGE. Usually you get the best results if you draw the cartoons larger than the size you intend to print at. That way shrinking down doesn't distort anything (but scaling up does).

When the drawing is in PS, then just make sure it's all done at 300 dpi. You'll be happy with the results...

Yes as long as he works to scale at 300dpi it will print just fine. - I cant even begin to imagine the file size of an image the size of an arcade cab tho... must be GB in size

This is only for the top of a cocktail table and it will be repeated in opposite corners similar to the standard Pac-man overlay but with lettering on the sides as well.  It will be large but not that bad - maybe 9" x 16" or so...

He is going to draw it the exact size I need in photoshop at 300 DPI.  I really hope this will do the trick!  He got back to me though and wants $360 for it because of the amount of work involved - 5 people plus lettering to draw, ink and color in photoshop.  I think I might actually go for it.  I'm insane but he is an amazing artist...

Artists don't come cheap.  I say go for it if they can do just what you want.

I think getting my fullsize sideart printed is going to cost a similar amount of cash, unfortunately!

No, but he is working for LucasArts now.  His website is www.tomhodges.com and there is some really neat stuff there.  He is very very talented.

OK, the bank is wiring the money to my PayPal account now so I can send the deposit to the artist when it arrives in my account.  I'm getting excited about the way my cab is going to look...
