Game donations for a handicapped kid.

My wife is an elementary school teacher. At her school there is a really great kid named Tyler who is permanently confined to a wheelchair. He's in the 6th grade this year, but he's at about a 2nd or 3rd grade level mentally. I'm not sure if he's expected to stay at that level for the rest of his life, or if improvenment is expected. In any case this is a super nice kid I'm talking about here. The family is very poor, there are a couple of other kids who are both normal. In any case my wife and I try to help them out from time to time when we can.

Which brings me to why I called you here today.

Talking to Tyler, I discovered that he's a big video game fan. Sadly, all he has is a Sega Genesis. Clearly I could not let this stand. I had an old PS2 that I wasn't using so I gave that & a couple games to the family. If any of you guys have some PS2 games that you're not playing any more, I'm sure Tyler would love to have them. Goz, that would be fantastic. I'm sure he'd love to have anything that came his way.

Also I guess I should mention that despite the fact that walking is not possible for Tyler, his manual dexterity seems to be more or less normal so special controllers are not needed for him. In any case, he can use a standard Genny controller and seemed to have no problem with a Dualshock.

Good point. We're talking about a kid who's essentially about 8 or 9 years old developmentally. You're a parent, so probably you can just use your own judgement. If it's okay for your kids it's probably okay for Tyler. Obviously I want to avoid gory/ graphic/ explicit language stuff.

And would some Genesis games be in order as well?  If we can get some list of what is going to him, I could probably kick in games for systems that other people are sending.  Some systems I have literally dozens of dups of games.

He can play sports games or so he tells me, which are usually somewhat complex. He's not having any problems with Jak & Daxter or Army Men so I don't think that he's super limited. Somehow I doubt he'd be able to handle a really complex RPG or something of that nature. Again, probably a judgement call. If you think a 'normal' 8-12 year old kid can play it, then Tyler probably can handle it.

Oh and one more point that just occured to me. I'm not trying to be a glory hog or anything. I'll be giving everyone full credit for the stuff they donate when I give it to Tyler. I'll be sure to tell him "This came from Chad in MA" changing the name & location when appropriate. I haven't told him or the family anything about this yet though. I didn't want to get thier hopes up in case nothing happened with it. Looks like several people are already expressing interest in donating though. This is working out great so far.

does he have an old computer, at least a PII?  someone can send him a bunch of nes/sega/snes roms and emulators on a cd if he doesn't have the internet or only dialup.  i have about 20 NES games, but i don't know if kids these days could take blowing on games 100 times.

i also have a few N64 games i wouldn't mind getting rid of.  is DK64 only playable with the expansion pack cause i want to keep that.

So, pretty much, you should be able to hit some torrent sites and download any DC game you can find that is appropriate.  You should probably make him a self booting NES emu disc, too.  Between that, and the stuff we've already got coming over, this kid will be well stocked.

For a kid of that mental level, I highly recommend the following games for the N64 (sorry I don't have any):

I have some Dreamcast games I'd gladly donate but I'm not sure if they'll play in a US Dreamcast...I'm guessing not without a swap-disc.  Let me know if there is a solution...I can't remember off hand what games I have except Tomb Raider & Jet Set Radio.

I think I remember that if you copy one, you can change the region code on it.  I have never tried it myself but I'm pretty sure I remember that, and it does stand to reason that it could be done simply.

Any new interest in this? A lot of people seemed interested in sending stuff, but only a couple actually did, at least so far.

Every time I see him he reiterates to me that he likes fighters and "adventure" games. I'm not sure if by adventure he means platformers or maybe something along the lines of ICO/ Beyond Good & Evil/ Tomb Raider. I'm thinking I may go out and buy him a game or two today at lunch. I'm not a big fighter fan, what's a good one on the PS2?

On the subject of what is or isn't appropriate, any games that I get that I'm not familiar with, I'll be sure and let his parents know that I don't know if it's a good game for kids and just let them make the call. These are really good people and they're very appreciateive of everything we've done for them. I don't think they'll get mad if a game that they think he shouldn't be playing slips through.
