I know some of you guys love your arguments about who said what, how they said it, and whether or not the people of New Orleans deserve to die or not.

If you haven't heard it yet, there's a very clear and direct plea for help from the Mayor of N.O.

Yes it's on the AirAmerica website, but that's totally irrelevant.

If you haven't heard it, this is the NPR interview with The Head of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff.

I'm not sure how to reply to this thread without sounding like I'm bashing the federal government. I'll just say that my thoughts are with the (honest) people still trapped in NO and I do hope they make it safety and get some food and water and I hope it happens today. I also hope that the nuts who are shooting at rescue workers come to their senses and allow the people of NO to be rescued soon.

Just so I'm understanding your multiple posts,  this "argument free zone" thread is about how to complain to your government officials about not doing enough to help.

I think our energy should be directed on how we can help the people who are trapped in their attics, and there is a sticky thread at the top everything else saying how to do that.

I'm not arguing, I'm just saying, help now, complain about Gore losing to Bush later.

Didn't take long for the poltics to get ugly did it? FWIW, I've donated what I can afford and will do so again next payday. Sadly it's not much, but I don't make much.

On a related and somewhat humorous note: Last night I was watching the US Open on TV. As usual John Mcenroe was doing commentary. He mentioned that he had just donated $25000 to hurricane relief and then he proceeded to more or less bully the other commentator (Ted Robinson, I think is the guy's name) into matching his contribution. Teds eyes looked like dinner plates, but he matched the donation. Made me laugh. Mcenroe is well known for his charitable work, if only all celebrities were so generous.

That's what we need.  More people to ante up.

We need to support whatever efforts we can find that will help these people.

I don't care if we have to save 100 scumbags just to find one innocent.  It's worth it.

Although I didn't catch numbers, I also heard last night that Andre Agassi (also well known for charitable work), Serena Williams, and Andy Roddick have made contributions. Agassi is also doing public service announcements for the Red Cross that are being aired during the Open. I watch a lot of Tennis, but not so much for any other sport. I hope that the big names in other sports are also doing their part. Anyone heard anything to that effect?

I agree, it's apparent the the state and local resources have collapsed within themselves.

Warrick Dunn, RB for the Atlanta Falcons is donating some money and also starting a drive to get every NFL player to donate at least $5,000 each to the effort.  That would make for some major cash.

I know for certain Brett Favre is utilizing his foundation for relief efforts, and he's teamed up with Steve McNair.

Javon Walker has pledged money, as has Joe Horn.

Stingray, those are all "foos-ball" players ;)

The Yankees and another player I can't remember pledged 1 million.  That's 1 mil from the Yankees organization, and another mil from an individual player.

That's baseball.

I know there's more from other sports, and more from the sports I've mentioned, but I simply can't keep track of all of 'em, nor confirm that they did actually contribute OTHER than the Favre Foundation - that I met/saw in person a bit of what they were doing.
