Definitely go to school.  I've seen lots of people work themselves into a good position with good pay, but no school.  Then they lose that job and have to start near the bottom somewhere else.  With the education the odds of finding a new job for similar pay are better.  College isn't  for everyone, but there are several trades to train in, and they pay well and are reliable work.
