Advance Menu locking up on Radeon 9800
« on: July 24, 2005, 01:03:15 am »
I'm using Windows XP SP2 with a Radeon 9800 AGP video card. When I try to use ADVCFG to set the video modes for Advmenu, my screen goes black when trying to set the selected video mode.

I am running the SVGAWIN.exe as well.

Is there a problem with SVGAWIN and Radeon 9800 video cards?

Has anyone else gotten a similar combination to work?

TIA

Haven't heard about the lockup before but swgawin doesn't work with Radeon 9xxx.

I'm wondering why you didn't buy an arcadevga (which is based on the ati 9xxx chipsets) if you knew you were gonna use your new card on a arcade cab.  Take the card back. Buy yourself and arcadevga.  Stop trying to be silly (If your system can handle a 9800 then there's no frikkin way you should be running dos for any reason.) Do things the right way.  :)

You can use powerstrip and regular mame (or advmame with SDL) with your 9800 card.

Not really.  I have a 9800, while possible it's not practical as most emulators and front-ends have their possible resolutions hard-coded in meaning even if you do unlock extra resolutions at the os level the applications might not support them.

Now this could also be said for the arcadeVga, but since it doesn't allow standard resolutions the act of "forcing" some of the other emulators/fe's does the trick.

So.... possible?  Of course.  Reccomended?  Definately not.

people seem to have mixed blessings with powerstrip.

But Howard is correct.  For the price you will have a MUCH better solution.

note:  powerstrip you need to pay to use after some given amount of days.  And the price of that + a 9800 and you have yourself an arcadevga + 10 bucks + the price of powerstrip (40bucks??)

I thought the trouble with powerstrip was that you forced the crt into interlaced mode (flashes) plus you couldn't hit native resolutions on any games.  Then you would have to force mame to stretch to the interlaced resolution.  This would remove a lot of the benifits of the arcade crt.

But the 9800 is REALLY nice when hooked to a bgrade video card.  I had a 9700 in my cabinet and I could set 8xAA because I only have 640x480 and the games look amazing on that crapply little resolution.  Was fun, but I changed it back to my main computer when I realized that I never played those games on that machine.   Of course I might change it back now that I have a control panel with a full keyboard and mouse on it.  But probably not.

No, you can create any resolution with powerstrip provided the card driver supports it and with ATI there doesn't seem to be any limitations.

(and running a mame game in interlaced or not makes almost no difference. In the beginning I used non-interlaced resolutions in my cabinet but I switched to interlaced because the artwork looks much better. If I didn't know what to look for I couldn't tell if the game is running interlaced or not)
