As a side note, if Mame runs with no sound, how do i set up the config file in mame to run no sound all the time ... I could use this just to test the mamewah theory.
From a command promt:
mame -cc
...then edit mame.cfg and set sound 0. As you say, this will test your theory...
minwah, you are making this thread confusing

mame.cfg file does not exist in mame (windows command line).
mame.ini should be there.
I can post the mame.ini file and mamewah.ini file here if anyone needs them. I am pretty sure I just missed a setting ... or is there a conflict with dos trying to access the sound card?
topdawgg,First you should care just for running mame with a command promp and make sure that you have a windows command line version of Mame(Not a Dmame).
As you mention your hardware Use a letter version of mame like mame 98.
be aware that your sound card and mixer drivers are properly installed.
check your mame.ini file.
