As a side note, if Mame runs with no sound, how do i set up the config file in mame to run no sound all the time ... I could use this just to test the mamewah theory.

From a command promt:

mame -cc

...then edit mame.cfg and set sound 0.  As you say, this will test your theory...

I already have the config file up and running and I will change it to 0 to test my theory ... still what can I do to make the sound work?

minwah, you are making this thread confusing :-\

mame.cfg file does not exist in mame (windows command line).

mame.ini should be there.

I can post the mame.ini file and mamewah.ini file here if anyone needs them.  I am pretty sure I just missed a setting ... or is there a conflict with dos trying to access the sound card?

topdawgg,First you should care just for running mame with a command promp and make sure that you have a windows command line version of Mame(Not a Dmame).

As you mention your hardware Use a letter version of mame like mame 98.

be aware that your sound card and mixer drivers are properly installed.

check your mame.ini file.

Actually, you are confusing things  :P.  MAME v0.36 is DOS based, as it was before Windows became the main build.  Therefore mame.cfg will be used instead of mame.ini.

As for getting dos sound to work in XP, I've no idea :(

This is good advice, you might want to try MAME v0.55 instead of the latest version tho, it will run faster on that system.

Wrong again ;)  I only *recommend* Windows commandline MAME.  DOS MAME, and MAME32 will work ok too, if you know what you're doing.

Try using ClrMAMEPro - it should be able to fix some of them.
