I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, but I'll give it a shot.

Question's kind of basic.  The illustration of the cab makes it look like a perspective shot of the corner of the CP from above - but the joystick and button are drawn from the side.

I think you're seeing the white area as the control panel.  The black angled area on the left is the angled area where the monitor would be.  The lower black area is the actual control panel seen from the side.  The vertical line just shows the distinction between control panel and monitor/rest of cab.  The joy and buttons are standing up because the view is as if you were staring at the side of the control panel at eye level.

That's how I see it anyway.
