Question for car guys.

How many quarts of oil does a big block dodge 440 engine take?

Probably 7 or 8 quarts

If your changing it yourself, put in 6 quarts and check the dipstick.  If it's still low add another quart and check again.  When you get it to the full mark start the engine and let it idle for a couple minutes to fill up the oil filter and the rest of the system.  Shut it off and wait 5 minutes, check the oil again, top off as necessary.

Most importantly when your done write down how much oil it takes.  Using a paint marker under the hood somewhere is also a good idea.
so I said . . . . . WHATEVER!

My old 71 Challenger 440 took 6 qrts.

A buddy of mine had a 440 in a Coronet and it only took 5 qrts.

There are different capacity oil pans.

Pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual for the vehicle. If this is for a motorhome, it may take much more.

Hope it helps,

Call your local bookstores and find one that has any manual for the motorhome.  Then go there with pen & paper in hand.  Write down the capacities for oil/trans/etc.  or buy the book if it is good.

Haynes will be the most in-depth but will cost a few bucks.  You could also call a motorhome dealer and see if they have a manual too.  Either an owners or a repair manual.

A 440 in a truck type of vehicle is going to have a larger oil pan than for an old hotrod.  I can guarantee you it's going to be more than 5 qts.

Personnally I think looking for a manual for your mid/late 70's motorhome in a book store is going to be a waste of time (at least in any of the bookstores I'm familiar with in the St. Louis area).  I'd forget about trying to find a manual unless one came with the motorhome (and if it did why would you be asking here).

I stand behind my recommendation for starting off with 6 quarts and checking the dipstick.  If you want to be even more careful, you can fill up the oil filter (out of the 6 quarts) before you put it on (that's if its the standard screw on type and NOT a canister type).
so I said . . . . . WHATEVER!

Actually I have all the manuals, there are like 40 of them. I just figured someone here might already know, and that would save me having to wade through all those manuals to find the info.

There should be a single page that lists the oil capacity, spark plug gap, etc.  Check in the tune-up section.  Chapter one, page one or appendix one is the most common area to have the chart.

are you guys still only able to buy oil in little one liter bottles? i find that so funny. when i drove down the west coast in my beat up ol' stang i had a boot (sorry, trunk) full of dinky little oil bottles...

edit: if that 440 is in your motorhome, i hope you arent driving it far- i bet you'd be lucky to get mileage in the 'real integer' range!

why does it matter anyway? just start putting oil in it until it's at the right level. a bit tedious with those lil quart bottles but you'll need spares anyway. buy 8 or so and you can't go wrong...

Yeah, you can buy oil in five quart bottles just about everywhere that sells oil.

Except of course gas stations which will charge you the 5 quart price for the 1 quart bottles.

take it to a trusted small garage, pay the guy $25 to change the oil, and ask him how many it took when he's done.

might be worth the investment.

also, look on the ends of doors and inside the door frames, on top of the radiator, oil filler cap, fenders under the hood (or in there somewhere).  Most cars I've owned have it written on something obvious on the car itself.  Of course I've never owned a custom coach... just factory bodied automobiles.

here's the problem with the 5 quart bottles.  7 or 8 quarts doesn't go evenly into 5 quart increments.  I know you can guess-timate 2 quarts out of one of the 5 quart bottles, but it's just as easy to buy a case (12 bottles) of the one quart bottles and I doubt if the price is much if any different.  It 's not like you won't have a use for the rest of the oil, you just have to store it for a while.

I've actually never owned a car that used any other quantity of oil than five quarts. Oddly, the one liter engine in my Mini and the 5.7 liter V8 in my 3/4 ton Chevy pickup both use five quarts of oil.
