Ms Pac Cocktail - Sweet and Clean
« on: March 07, 2005, 11:19:41 am »
Hey everybody.  just wanted to throw up some pics of my cocktail cab I just finished.

Like a lot of people I started this hobby a long time ago and wanted the huge frankenpanel 4 player, tball, driving wheel cab.  Well I made that kinda cab and learned a lot.   But what I really learned was I wanted the TRUE game experience.  nothing beats a  game of Ms Pac, Galaga or Donkey Kong, just the way it was supposed to be played.

So here is my latest.  Good plain clean boring vertical 4-way sweet goodness. Straight from the pizza parlour or bowling alley of your youth  ;D

other pics are here :

I still need to find a place for coin-in and exit.  most games are set to free play, but some games still need the coin.  I want to keep it as clean as possible.  right now the plan is to hide small buttons somewhere or do what I've done before and rig them to the coin returns.

custom CPs (just pshopped the ones  in the art library)

Thanks man!

also it's not  all pure.  one requirement to make it into the house is that it had to play puzzle bobble.

I set up the 2 player controls backwards so you can still play head to head mode.  kinda fun that way.

No more cocktails!!!!  Bah, I get the bug everytime someone posts these.  Very nice, I would love to have one.  That even looks just like the kind I used to play.  Not Mame looking at all.
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

Nice!  Is that the original monitor too?  Any major refurbing you had to do or anything?

Hey Nannuu, you can come over whenever you want and play...kept the coin mechs just for that reason  ;)   BTW you like those player start buttons?  THE world famous Nannuu player button graphics.  I am so bad at photoshop....I had your graphics and I saw it as a perfect way to use them.  At least that way they would be perfectly spaced.

Sasquatch, The monitor is a 19" Dell  computer monitor.    Believe it or not, after I decased the monitor  it fit right in.  Some slight tweaking to make sure it was in there secure, but really nothing much.  These cocktails open up like a clam and the monitor moves with the top so the monitor has to be in there really good.  The orginal bezel and smoked plexi even fit perfectly.

All the guts (Mr. Do conversion) were removed and that made just enough room for a small PC, the speakers and a powerstrip. Man, with the monitor hanging down there really is NOT a lot of room in there.

The cocktail was in great conditon.  I pretty much just repainted the glass clips and CPs (Krylon Textured Black spraypaint) installed the underlay (bought it from Simcomm ) and drilled an extra hold in the CPs for 2 buttons.  popped the controls in, hooked up the Keywiz and off I was.

sad thing is that I have an upright Ms Pac cab that was going to be my 4-way vertical machine....now what am I going to do with it?  hmmmm wonder if a 4 player cp would fit..........just kidding  :P

My god, you are spoiled over there in the US...
In the extremely unlikely event that I were to find such a coctail for sale over here in Sweden my guess would be I'd have to pay at least 5-10 times that to buy it.  :(

My only option would be to build it myself from scratch, were I ever to stumble across a blueprint for one.

...almost forgot - it looks awesome!
I really hate those have-it-all-in-one-cabinet thingys, this is how an arcade cabinet should look like!  :)

Wow! major bump. Thanks for the compliments!

I have to say I was going to build a cocktail first, it was really hard to find one that was in decent shape.

One thing I would say about cocktails that is diffferent than uprights...the monitor has to really be secured well.  Gravity doesn't help keep it mounted like in uprights...in fact gravity can really ruin your day in a cocktail cab.

The other thing that sucks about a cocktail, moving it (believe it or not) is HARDER than an upright.  at least by yourself.  The hard part is getting it in a truck by yourself.  OMFG, bsaically I lifted the whole thing single handedly onto my truck, and my truck has a HIGH load height.  man it was horrible.

and of the course the issue with floorspace that is well mentioned. when you add the chairs and the space needed surrounding a cocktail you actually take up more space than an upright.  However from my perspective the lower profile and smaller stature of cocktails make them blend in a little easier than uprights.

Good luck!!

You picked that up at a Super Auction here in Mesquite? You're lucky I wasn't there!  ;)

I've been planning on building my own, but you just can't beat a Midway cocktail cab for $75. It looks really good. Congrats!

I'm going to be building one with a kit from arcadecontrols.com but I'm waiting for my bday to pass so I can see if I get any parts.  :)
