Mamewah reset nearly all INI files?
« on: June 20, 2005, 10:12:07 am »
My son told me some of the NES games wouldn't load, so I tok a look, and he was only partly right... as I checked, I found that NONE of the NES games would load. Neither would SNES, AppleII, Sega, Atari 2600, Atari 7800.... etc....

Upon checking, I found that for all but 3 emulators, my INI files had been overwritten with DEFAULT ini files, containing no PATH/ROM/SNAP info, also default romlist generation settings, etc.

I had backups, so restoration was not a huge deal... still, I'm trying to figure out what made this happen...?

Is this a known issue? I believe I'm on 1.61, but can verify if necessary.

I had this same problem once, but I have only been running my cab for about 2 weeks. I thought it was from turning the whole system off without doing a shutdown of windows, maybe not. Any thoughts?

I have no idea why this might happen (I have never experienced it).  Next time you have set it up make a backup, and keep an eye on it in case it occurs again (let me know any info you have).

And sorry you have to set things up again :(

Hey Brewser guess what...

I asked my son if he had seen anything goofy before the games stopped working -- his reponse: "well, all of the sudden the buttons on the panel wouldn't work, so I reached inside the cabinet and shut the machine off. Then when it came back on, it was just like that, where the gamed wouldn't run."

I think we may be on to something!

It shouldn't really cause a problem as MAMEWAH should read the ini files and close them straight away...but I suppose if the PC goes ape sometime in between and someone switches it off then this could happen...

I've had similar issues where my computer has locked up and I've had to either ctrl-alt-delete or hit the reset button on the cp (I don't remember) and all?/some? of my mamewah ini file settings got lost.

Ironically this also happened when my kids were playing. I think it really has to do with no properly shutting down windows. I have followed the one button cab shutdown and just ordered the powerstrip with the shutdown support. I am planning on wiring a button on the cab to do the windows startup.

This happened to me once as well, the only thing I did different the time it happen was I used the MAMEWAH selection to turn off my PC, now I keep a backup of all my inis and exit Mamewah to Windows  then shutdown normally.

Minwah -

I know that at least in my case, the system was actively running FCEU at the time of the lockup, and thus the improper shutdown happened well after Mamewah had done it's magic.

It's not a huge issue for me, 'cause like I said I have good backups and stuff... But if you'd like any assistance with trying to reproduce the problem, just let me know.

An interesting thing in this regard... with my INI files, lots and lots of information defaulted to either blank or default settings. For instance, in every case, "list_generation_method" was set to ROM_FOLDER_VS_LISTXML -- I only ever use that for MAME, and for everything else I just use ROM_FOLDER.

What circumstances would cause the INI files to be replaced with default files? That is sure what it looks like happened to me. Any thoughts?

MAMEwah has does the same thing to me...started with visual pinball, had to remove and replace the ini, then it took down super nintendo, did the same thing...

Nothing happend to the computer, it was just a fluke, I guess.  Best advice is to keep a backup of the ini files and it's a sinch to replace them...

Still the best front end out there!
