Compiling Advance Mame?

Does anyone have any experience compiling advmame? 
I have read the documentation provided with advmame and it isn't real clear.  I am trying to compile under winxp and have not been successful.  If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate any advice or hints you could give me.
