www.emumovies.com Intros for Mamewah
« on: April 19, 2005, 09:42:42 pm »
Just to let everyone know about my new site, www.emumovies.com.  I am currently in the process of creating Intro movies for all emulated console and arcade game systems including Mame.  These are high quality AVI files that look great in screensaver and preview modes.  Unlike rips that I have found these are not 20 or 30 second clips, the length varies with each game.  Every rip starts with a gameplay sequence then shows the intro sequence ending with the title screen.

We are also looking for anyone who would like to help, check out our message boards for information.

Thanks

By High-Quality.. do you mean 640x480?  In my opinion, this is the resolution needed for a decent screensaver.

320x240 is fine for previews.

Very interesting. Of course there's no need to create MAME intro movies.  ;D

I never thought of it before, but I could probably whip up a MESS Movie Maker pretty easily. I have no interest in that, however.

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

I would've thought that Arcade84 video (with the Journey song "Stone In Love") would've been the PERFECT intro......

i'm a little confused about what an intro movie is. I thought it was just a 10-20 sec clip that played on the start of a frontend. Why would you want loads for each emu?

There are two kinds of intro movies. One is what you describe. The other kind of movie is made from each game's intro screen. Many modern front ends can play the movies as the front end scrolls through the list of games. That way you can get some idea of the gameplay wthout actually launching each game.

I wrote MAME Movie Maker to create these videos, since manually capturing thousands of movies would be a major pain. Plus, MMM will generate movies at the correct frame rate, even for games that run too slowly to be playable. MMM movies also can have sound whenever attract mode sound is turned on.

MESS Movie Maker will be a future project.

MAME Movie Maker thread

The more I think about the MESS Movie Maker, the more I like it. I'll add it to my "to do" list.

Opps! That's what I meant, your Mame Movie Maker. It's looks VERY interesting. The only reason I haven't tried it is because you need to compile mame (i've never done it but can't be that bad) and there doesn't seem to be any real docs or instructions. I have followed the thread from the beginning and love the idea just didn't want to invest the time to jump all over the place trying to figure it out.

Thank you,
John

That makes sense. I always called them snap movies or attract movies. I thought this tread was just referring to the intro movie thats played when the frontend loads. Thanks for clearing that up

They are 320x240 previews 1 to 2 min in length. i tried 640x480 but the file sizes were huge and 320x240 looks great on my wg9200.  I am phisically going into each game because each preview starts with gameplay and then goes through the intro sequence.  That waywhen scrolling through the list you can tell if you want to play or not.  I have samples up on the website if anyone is interested.

Previews are probably a better term.  I think that I will use that in the future ;D

Sounds cool, thanks for taking the time to create these.  I think showing a little snippet of gameplay in the movies is a great idea, as it gives a little more info than the attract screens.

I totally agree, Circo, go with this one.  I really liked the intro movies that showed gameplay better than the ones that didn't.  Keep up the good work.  BTW, Buddabing, I thought your mame movie maker was a great idea also, but I shared jcrouse's reluctance to roll my own and/or sort through all the technical details on that long message thread.

You may not have the DivX codec installed. Go to http://www.divx.com/divx/ and click on the third one down (free download). This will get you the required codec for windows media player.

circo,
Thanks for making this available to the community. But your web site could use some help.  Put a summary paragraph on your website describing the purpose and maybe a short tutorial on how to implement them.  Your blurb in your early news post will get washed away in time.

Your news says this:
Quote
FYI the NES set is no longer being seeded as it does not conform to new standards. However it will be reseeded upon request
What do you mean "seeded"?

And where are the files you are making?  The link to http://torrent.mametitles.co.uk/ says:  "Error:You're not authorized to view this Torrents!"
What the heck is a Torrent?

I'll take a shot but I'm no expert. A torrent is a form of peer to peer file sharing. It is very common in the emulation (rom sharing) community. The torrent is a file that points to a tracker which is like a server that keeps track of all the file sharers (seeders) and people downloading (leechers). The site where a lot of us get our files is petr1fied;s tracker. It located here: http://torrent.mametitles.co.uk/ . I would recommend you sign up. It's great. However, before you start downloading read through the general forum. They have STRICT rules about upload/download ratios and it's pretty easy to get banned when you first start.

Good Luck,
John

Thanks for all the good comments.  I just found out today that I have to leave town for buisness for three weeks, which actually means that I ought to have at least two more sets done by the time I get back.

I agree about the website needing a little work, it's my first one so bear with me I will see what I can do about it when I get back.  I do not know if I will even have internet access so I might disappear for a while.

Also emumovies.com has excedded it's bandwidth limit (didn't think that I would go through a GB but hey thats pretty cool :-).  Anyway it will reset in a couple of days so don't worry.
