VOB to Mpeg or other friendly format
« on: April 25, 2005, 09:27:43 am »
i borrowed a friends SONY MiniDVD handycam and made a small DVD of me playing guitar for a prospective instructor..
i need to email a small clip of the video to him but i need to get the video out of VOB format and into Mpg or somethign similar so i can import it into window movie maker to edit it..
ive seen a few programs that do this but they are all overpriced, certainly there must be a free or fully functional shareware program that can accomplish this.
i dont care what the end format is, so long as it can be played either with WMV or quicktime or something.

thanks!

I haven't used "windows movie maker", but you should try renaming the file from .vob to .mpg

.vob files are mpeg files, for all intents and purposes, and everything on my PC that plays mpeg-2 files will also play .vob files

i read that as well, but when i put the .mpg extension on the end it still remains a .vob.
to look at the details you get

filename.mpg.vob

maybe its a digital rights management addition to the windows shell since SP2 to prevent that .
is ther another way to attempt renaming a files extension>?

Thankx Peale!! ;D
Works like a charm

filename.mpg.vob

Sounds like you have hidden extensions in windows explorer.  Go to Tools | Folder Options.  Select the View tab, and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types."

Or, you're getting a warning about causing problems when changing file types and you're letting Windows boss you around.  Make sure you confirm that you really do want to change the extension.

I am able to rename VOB files in XP ... I suspect that your shell settings may be what is preventing you from doing this successfully (you should get a warning if you try to change the extension).

VOB files are a subset of MPEG-2, so renaming usually works. Sometimes, though, depending on the software being used, you can end up losing aspect/ratio or audio.

Best bet is a good DVD ripper/encoder.

A good place to start is:

Pull down the Format Conversion menu and you are off to the races.

Cheers.

Doesn't Nero do this as well, with some plug-in or something?
