N00bee question regarding Mamewah...
« on: March 30, 2005, 06:56:49 am »
I am new to the Mame world, I hade some older version a few years back but only had 2-3 games on it that I even liked. I have been able to operate Mame32 on my PC, but I am having a hell of a time getting command line Mame and Mamewah to function together. Guess I just cannot figure out all the little .txt files I have to alter/copy/etc.

I did find a program from a UK company website which seemed to have a windows based application that streamlined Mamewah and featured popup windows that you 'fillout' as opposed to numerous .txt files. But, this website/program doesn't support the newest Mamewah.

Does anyone have any sort of recommendation as to what the problem may be, or at least where a good website is for this stuff (I've searched, but it seems most people get further than me or are using some sort of different version)?

Also, is Mamewah one of the better front ends? I looked at just 1-2 others and I seem to like Mamewahs look the most.

Thanks for any help.

First off, I would spend a little time in the MameWAH forum here: http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=arcadeospc2jamma

Also, a fellow board member, Screaming, has created a config tool that should help a lot. Also, I have a lot of information on my website at http://home.comcast.net/~cpviewer . Check out the INI files link on the downloads page.

Good Luck,
John

My MAMEWAH Config program is like an updated version of that old MAMEWAH Setup, only my version is "supercharged". Check it out, it will give you flow.

Also, is Mamewah one of the better front ends?

This question will either not get replied to, or will get you flamed. Figuring out "the best" frontend is a highly subjective procedure that you just have to figure out for yourself. That said, MAMEWAH is probably the most popular frontends for running games (which is what I'll assume you meant with your question).

Thanks Screaming, I've spent a little bit with your program the last day or so. Seems to be helping. Still cannot get a program to run from Mamewah but at least your program has allowed games to showup on the mamewah screen. So there's some progress there.

The current issue is I cannot find my "mame.dat" file? No idea where this is or if I am supposed to create on somehow? That and of course, that none of the games will play!  :)

But just looking for a little progress every day!

And now Mamewah crashes when I try to close it out   :'(

When I run Mamewah, it runs it at a higher resolution (smaller frames and text?), and won't let me run the games that I have listed (no surprise, haven't been able to do that at all) and now it's crashing my PC when I try to escape? Is this common?

Uh, no.  I suggest you take aaaaallll that you learned in the past couple days and implement it with a fresh install of MAMEWAH. Rename your old mamewah folder and re-download the .zip and start 100% from scratch.

Thanks for your help, not sure if this board is friendly to newbie questions or not (some seem to be, others not really), but hopefully you veterans out there don't

I think, generally, we really are a pretty friendly group.  Personally, I help out as much as I can as long as the person asking the question has put out a little effort in solving his own problem before asking the same question that's already been asked 1000 times.

Searching the AC message boards, searching google, and doing a little reading is all it takes to find the answers to 85% of the questions out there.  Not only will you get the answer to your question quicker, but you'll feel better accomplished (that you did it yourself) and you'll not piss off the people that could help you with more serious and genuine problems ("bite the hand that feeds you", as it were).

Aside from that, it's just proper BBS etiquette.

I've now got my NES program working with Mamewah (thanks again for that config program!). Will have to find a way to fix the 'crashing' after I am done with each game, but I am making progress now.

I am using 'NesterJ' as my NES emulator, in your opinions, is that the best one? Are there others out there that you'd recommend?

Thanks for any info!  :)
