To roll back, or not to roll back? That is the question.
« on: March 30, 2005, 12:21:53 am »
Alright, my system stats:

Athlon 1 Ghz (Tbird?  Actually a 1.33, but it has never been able to run at full speed).
Abit KT7 motherboard
1gb of pc133 sdram
Asus V8200 video
40 gig hd
Win2k, Mamewah
MAME v.89

The real question is, would I gain playability in games that now run rough, such as Area 51?  What version should I roll back to, if any?  I realize that the 3d stuff is mostly not going to happen with this box, and that's fine.  I just want to get the most out of it, and keep my lightgun functionality.  Any thoughts?

You AREN'T gonna gain area 51, but you could gain some other titles, specifically the stuff on Mortal Kombat hardware.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

If you still have the old format CHD image for Area 51, it wouldn't hurt to give it a whurl with Mame .63 and see how it runs.

Oops!  Missed the 'old format' part.  What does an old format CHD image look like, as opposed to the new?

All the CHDs changed to a new format in Mame 0.78 and the tool chdman.exe was used to convert the old CHDs to the new format. The newer format uses better compression that results in smaller file sizes. I don't know a whole lot about it, but maybe there's a way to use chdman to convert your chd back to the old format ?

Thanks again, I'll see what I can do with that and clrmamepro.  Given  paigeoliver's input though, I may just bite the bullet and upgrade.  There's no substitute for horsepower.
