Is it necessary? For example, my Crystal Castles can be configured completely through the operator menu (settings are saved even when the game is unplugged). Star Wars is from the same era, so I assume it would work the same way. (Does MAME not save those settings?)

My Wishlist....

Have a freeze on new rom additions for a set period, and use that time to perfect the current drivers.

Removal of all Mahjong games...if necessary, for the 2 people in the world that play them, create a MahjongMame distro.

Remove all Bootleg games, with the exception of games where a bootleg is needed to play, due to original encryption not yet removed etc.

Option to remove ALL warning messages...screen flipping, known problems etc.

Have a more flexible and easier to configure method of mapping all controls...

tsk tsk.

MAME is about documenting and cataloging  the inner workings of as many arcade machines as possible.  Since bootlegs exist, they'd kind of exist in the documentation project.

It's not about playing games.  I love MAME for the documentation aspect... i mean...   ;D

If you don't want Mahjong games, then just remove them yourself. Same goes for 'bootlegs'.
The warning messages are there for legal purposes and will always be a part of Mame- they're in there for our own good. Warnings about inacurate emulation etc. can be turned off if you don't want them (though if it's going to be v1.0final all of these would be ironed out).

What exactly do you find so troublesome with the current control mapping?

Says a few lines in a text file, the developers personal web pages and messages tell a much different story.

The problem is that there was no way to legally have even developed that bootleg support. The same goes for a few one off machines that the mame devs could not have possibly had in their possesion, which means the development was done using rom files they did not have the legal rights to use.

I personally don't care about the ethics of the issue, just the internal inconsistencies. Mame does not support illegal rom use, yet was developed via illegal rom use.
