UPDATE AVGA ....SUCCESS ( PIC )
« on: March 03, 2005, 01:01:09 am »
Unfortunately this pic does no justice to how good it really looks

These are the error screen shots ....looks like atidvag is causing the problem..

I figured I would run into problems, but this is ridiculous. Got a new AVGA 9200 today along with a new arcade monitor.  Getting drivers to install was just a absolute nighmare.  After finally putzing around for hours, got the drivers to install.  Computer just not continually reboots and reboots after it passes the initial Windows XP screen.  First thing I did before setting the whole thing up was uninstall the old geforce drivers.  I then put in the AVGA installed the drivers, it told me it would run a test....then it just looped and looped.  I rebooted in safe mode and windows says the AVGA driver is causing the problem.  I uninstall the drivers, reinstall....now it won't detect the avga, but will detect secondary R9250...will install those drivers fine, but not the primary port.  I read several posts here and follow those to no avail.  I disable both the R9250 and VGA in device manager, uninstall ATI software again, delete any essense of ati*.* in windows\system32 and reboot.....upon reboot avga and secondary is recongnized.....yippy.....install software......tell me upon reboot......will run a series of test........loop loop loop reset....yada yada.....

What can I do......and please don't say reinstall xp...

um, reinstall xp?  sorry, i really don't see any other option.  it'll probably save you time and frustration in the end.

In my opinion, re-installing the OS is like replacing a car's engine just because you haven't found the source of an engine problem.

Hey Ray, but if you had unlimited free engines sitting there that were perfectly good, and it was actually easier to install one of them than debug the old engine, what would you do?

Edit:

Oh and yeah, unfortunately I would probably spend the time finding the disk and re-installing xp, maybe with the card already installed in there.  I -think- the AVGA is an ATI based card, and while I love a good Canadian company, they are the most problematic when it comes to drivers/conflict.  I've wiped many a good computer over the years since the day I first bought an ati card (I think it was a VLB Mach 32).  Otherwise you will be chasing ghosts in the machine and getting frustrated (and we know that the card works for a great many people, so unless it actually is a flukey card, you have to assume the OS is at fault!)

Depends I guess. But my point was that reinstalling the OS doesn't solve your problem. It just helps you start back from zero again.

I have NEVER ever re-installed my OS. EVER. It's not worththe hassle of applications becoming unregistered, and settings being reset, etc, etc... I wouldn't risk that.

Of course if it's a fresh install and you haven't installed anything else, then I guess it won't hurt. But chances are he'll encounter the exact same problems again, becuase the OS here isn't the problem.

Vader: I'd remove the card and re-insert it again, making sure it's perfectly snug in the slot. Then I'd try again with the drivers. I'd also email Andy, because he could tell you if it sounds like a hardware defect. If that's what it is, no amount of futzing around is going to fix it.

Sounds like you still have remnants of your Nvidia drivers kicking the ATI one out.

I would do a complete scan for any remnants of your Nvidia install. Re-install Direct X, then try a fresh install of the ATI driver.

While you are at it, try uninstalling your sound drivers prior to installing your video drivers, then re-install afterward. I know it might sound strange but I had a murderous time installing a new GPU last year (similar prob to you actually) and it turned out that the creative driver was interfering with it. I took them out then re-installed them after the card and everything was rosy. Don't ask me why?.
I didn't touch it....honest!

Load the driver in safe mode, but load them manually, (I.e. don't use the setup program), right click my computer, select manage, go to device manager,
display adapters, click on your display adapter, select driver, select update driver, Install from a list or specific location, click include this location in the search, browse to where the unzipped drivers are (can't remember the location on the cd, but I believe they are there) and then select next.Or click search cdrom.

This should help you install your drivers.

Later,
dabone

Suggestion[/font]

1st. Use "Driver Cleaner"  to completely remove any rests of the ATI and NVIDIA drivers from your system.

2nd. Reboot Computer in Safe Mode.

3rd. Manually install the drivers for AVGA just like dabone said.

EDIT: In this step also reinstall DirectX: :)

4th. Reboot and go play some real arcade games.

 ;D :D :D ;D :D :) ;D ;D :)

Hmm, second guess would be the memory.  Do you have more than one stick of ram in there, or some other ram from another computer?? Whenever I get a system that reboots like you have, and I've got a fresh install, I start swapping out components until I find the culprit.  Memory is a usual suspect in reboots.  Quick question, was this a re-install of XP overtop the old, or a format disk install?  I ask since installing over top the old version would keep a lot of the old drivers, ini's etc.  No worries, we'll get you through this.  :)

May want to try ATI's website and see if there are any driver updates for the card.

Is your XP OS up-to-date?  Running SP2?

If you have a second PC to try it on or a buddies (and can talk him into it) that way you can confirm the card is good.

those are custom drivers from Ultimarc so you can use the arcade resolutions so ati standard catalyst drivers are no good..   I'm running SP2 fresh install, it is not slipstreamed.  Unfortunately all i have is my standard computer and I cant slap that card in here and take a chance on it causing havoc.....strange thing is when normal drivers are there it is fine....as soon as ultimarc...it goes to hell

So the problem all along was you forgot the initial step of loading your chipset/AGP drivers before loading your video card drivers.

Good hardware and good software are only 2/3 of the equation.  You need good drivers to help them talk together.  In the future, always use up to date chipset drivers first, and ask questions second.  Modern hardware is becoming so complex that the days of plugging a video card in and having a picture are disappearing quickly.  I don't know how many problems I diagnose for clients that are simple driver-related issues.

Most motherboards will happily grab update chipset drivers from WindowsUpdate.  Of course, for AVGA users, make sure not to download update ATi drivers when updating your system.

For anyone who still can't find success, you'll need to figure out your motherboard chipset, and then go visit the manufacturer's driver download page:

VIA users need the Hyperion drivers:
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

Nvidia users, the nforce drivers:
http://nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

SiS users, the SiS chipset drivers:
http://www.sis.com/download/

Intel kids, you'll want the Intel INF updates (INFINST.exe for your chipset):
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/

Enjoy the full potential of your various busses.

it had nothing to do with my motherboard drivers........i loaed the latest drivers for the mb before I ever loaded the avga ones, it was just something where the avga ddn't want to cooperate with one of the settings....maybe something it didn't like about the soyo mb, I'm not sure...but no matter know....I made a recovery cd so got the configuration good....and life is good.....dam these games look good....

A *lot* of people have had problems installing the AVGA.  Other than the price, it's a big reason I haven't gotten one to test here in the lab.

I never thought it to much trouble. But I back up everything all the time to DVD .
Must be all the places I go fishing on the web I allways seem to get bad stuff going on my PC.

Leo! He's up here in Toronto now... Call for Help is on Canadian TV.

Anyways, that quote from Leo is an over-simplification for non-techies. There's no such thing as "bit rot". If there was, Windows would just stop functioning at all the second a critical file became corrupt. No the reason he recommends fresh installs is for the average non-techy user who most likely doesn't keep stuff up to date, installs stupid things like "internet accelerators", "Gator", Bonzi buddy, etc...  and basically F up their systems through simple not knowing any better.

For me, I've been using PCs since '91 (before that had a C64) and I just use good "computing practices" (which these days means firewalls, up to date anti-virus software, patches, latest drivers, spyware detectors, etc, etc) And I also run registry cleaners. That's the biggest reason for a fresh OS install is so you don't have all the garbage of old registry entries, but running a good registry cleaner has the same effect.

NO MORE!!

it had nothing to do with my motherboard drivers........

It had everything to do with the motherboard drivers.

In your previous post you discussed changing the CPU to AGP controller driver.

In reference to the MB drivers.  I'm not sure if which user told me to install the latest driver thinking I had not installed them which I had, that is what I was referring to, sorry if it was taken another way.  The same drivers worked fine with my previous gpu's but just did not like the avga for whatever reason, combination of via,soyo,avga...I don't know....It just had to be switched to another driver, no harm no foul...

I'll post pics tonite...of course don't know how well they well turn out.....any particular game ?

To all those he helped...thank you very much...

Tim
