Steering Wheel, possible on this cab?
« on: March 01, 2005, 10:50:33 am »
This is my cab guys. I'd like to add a streering wheel, but obviously there is no room on the top of the CP. Is there a way to maybe add it to the vertical section (front) of the control panel? Maybe have the steering wheel quickly removable so as not to get in the way of the joystocks/buttons? I'd really like it if I could had some padels too.

What do you think guys? Has anyone done something similar to a cab like this before? Any suggestions for steering wheels/pedals.

Thanks in advance

You could have a small door on the front vertical section that opens out like an ashtray.  It would be hinged on the bottom and open to 90 degrees.  On the back of the door would be a 45 degree steering wheel mount.  You then would need to construct a removable steering wheel similar to what they have in NASCAR.  The hinges would need to be extra strong and you might have to add 2 locking struts to keep the assembly steady.  For the pedals you could make a drawer like 1UP does in his new cab.  You could also store the steering wheel in the drawer when not in use.   You could also just mount the pedals to base.

Thats a good idea! Not sure if I like the idea of cutting into the front of the control panel though. I'll have to think about it....

What about replacing one of your joysticks with an optical rotating joystick and attaching a steering wheel to it?

There was some previous discussion about attaching a steering wheel to a spinner, but some question about whether or not the spinner was hefty enough to handle it.   I've not used an optically spinning joystick so I don't know what the spinning-movement is like, but the joystick should certainly be stronger than the skinny spindle that a spinner rotates on.

I think the joysticks are too near the screen for that idea. I 'm going to go with a hinged piece of wood. Now I just need to decide which wheel to get. I think I want a 360 degree. Probably a pc/usb one. Any suggestions?
