Nintendo Sanyo monitor keeps blowing fuse
« on: February 13, 2005, 01:44:54 am »
Hi, I recently bought a sanyo monitor for a nintendo cabinet for $20. The catch was that the guy claims that every time it was powered up, it blew the fuse in the cabinet (the fuse next to the on switch). Has anybody ever heard of this problem before? Would a cap kit do anything to help solve this problem?
Any input would help! Thanks, Steve

Sounds like there was a fault in the game cabinet's wiring harness or isolation transformer. Remember that Nintendo Sanyo monitors are designed to operate on 100 volts AC power. Genuine Nintendo cabinets sold for use in the USA have a step down isolation transformer installed. It drops the voltage down from 120 volts to 100 volts. Also in Nintendo cabinets the monitor and the marquee light fixture plug into that dual power outlet in the bottom of the cabinet so it's possible that the light fixture may be a source of the problem. Try unplugging the light fixture temporarily.

update: I plugged the monitor into my popeye game. There was a blue flash-the fuse in the monitor chassis blew. It wasn't the fuse in the game cabinet near the plug. I am new to this so if anyone has any ideas at all it would be appreciated. I am trying to determine weather it is worth it to pay someone $75 an hour to fix it or put a cap kit in it. Thanks, Steve

Well, it could be a shorted horizontal output transistor, the flyback might be bad (there's reproduction flybacks available now), you might have bad diodes in the main power supply section of the monitor.
